    Major League Eating

Sat in my Hua Hin hotel room the other night unable to sleep i turned on my 40+ cable channel TV to see what my english language options were.
    Well
FoxNews. 10 minutes of that does my head in
Australia Network was showing a repaetaof a news type programme i had already seen
Some obscure movie channnel showing a crap movie.
Eurosport showing a Italian Serie B match from the boondocks

So I switched to the old standby ESPN. Perhaps a bit of EPL or a repeat of the NFL but no.
I was treated to the Jacksonville Bratwurst eating competition from Wisconsin.

Now I have been aware for sometime of the Nathan's Hot Dog eating competition from coney island where for the alst several years a small, young Japanese kid has beaten the yanks into the dust as regards the consumption of those delicious hotdogs but I always thought it was a side show event. a fairground spectacle. but no longer.

Professional wrestling is no longer at the bottom of the heap of professional "sports". We now have Major League Eating with its own website

International Federation of Competitive Eating - IFOCE

    And a professional circuit.
Not knowing when the eating season starts or finishes the event Iwatched announced that this Japanese kid has earned US $100,000 in prize money so far this season breaking records all over the place.

This does not take into account sponsorship or the fact that he never has to buy his own food.

Without a trace of tongue in cheek the commentators were talking about the Tale of the Plate, the various skill sets required to consume the various foodstuffs. The differing circuits such as the hamburger circuit, the chocolate circuit and even enetered into a discussion of the types of fluid the contestants would drink in order to ease down those Brats. One of the competitors even had a "hat cam" to provide more interesting shots of the competition

Apparently enticed by the new money that has come to the sport it now features an array of younger "character athletes" instead of the usual fat slobs that particiapted in the Nathans contest.

I vote for it to be entered into the Olympic Games. Darn sight more interesting than Rythmic Gymnastics if you ask me.

By the By. Kobayashi won again eating 53 Brats in 10 minutes. Those throwing up any part of the consumed Brat are automatically disqualified.
Now that is slow motion i want to see

Americans my ass the champ years running is the little Japanese guy, He's got his zone "zen" technique.

Fat Americans come second. Dont forget the all England pie eating contest. But they weigh those guys in stones. Now I know a stone, but what what the hell kind of weight is a stone?

When I used to watch the Nathan's contest a number of years in coney island the contestants were usually big fat locals.
To me that is all it was a bit of fun to promote a brand.

Now it is more and it is down to the American's. Argue about whether they are good bad or indifferent all you like but they sure know how to market something
Now there is sponsorship and that little Japanese kid has made at least US $100,000 in prize winnings so far this year.

When he - Kobayashi - came along to the Nathan's he looked like a little bit dropped off the rest but he could eat them under the table.

If you look at the website - link in the Op - most of hese professinal eaters are quite small.
Joey Chestnut the number 2 looks like a beanpole and there is a woman at number 3 who looks as if you could throw her across a restaurant and she ate 30-40 Brats in 10 minutes - not a cheap date

By the by 14lbs in a stone
