Has One of the Great Records in Sports Been Broken?

I was just reading an article on Carl Hayman (former All Black and current Newcastle prop) and noticed this, a possible claim to one of sports greatest records maybe?

... He deflects claims he broke Australian cricketer David Boon's infamous beer drinking record on a flight home from the last World Cup... It took some bottle to tackle Carl Hayman on the Boon-breaking story but, in the interests of nailing the legend the questions had to be asked. So had he ever downed 60 Newcastle Brown?

"Sixty?" he queries. "In one go? No... I'm not sure where you're going here."

    The gentle smile suggests otherwise.

On the flight that took the All Blacks home to Christchurch after their quarter-final exit from the 2007 World Cup, Hayman, folklore has it, knocked back 60 cans of lager, breaking the sporting 'world record' set by Boon en route to London from Sydney with the Australian cricket team for the 1989 Ashes.

The Tasmanian, known as "kegs on legs," managed a mere 52.

"Oh, I don't know if it was 60, but it was a fair few," Hayman says, overcome with natural modesty. "You might have to ask Andrew Hore [the All Blacks hooker] when he comes over, because he was sitting with me. I know we sampled a few on the way home. I'm not sure if we got to 60...".

I knew you'd be into this one Willy!

The evidence is that Hayman's a great bloke and a legend. So pretty much the same as there was for Boony.

I think you might be thinking of downing a yard glass. Apparently at one point he had a legitimate record for it, Guinness Book verified and everything.

It's true though innit, what evidence is there for Boonies records aside from the oft-repeated hearsay yarn and the musings of some teamates?

Same same here. This story came from somewhere, the reporter didn't just make it up and ask the question on the off-chance.

    ^^Yep:
His academic achievements were complemented by setting a new world speed record for beer drinking: a yard glass (approximately 3 imperial pints or 1.7 litres) in eleven seconds.[8] In his memoirs, Hawke suggested that this single feat may have contributed to his political success more than any other, by endearing him to a voting population with a strong beer culture
    Brilliant!

11 seconds for a yard is pathetic. I've seen several people do one quicker than that, fastest I ever saw was 3 and a half seconds and I don't think it would be physically possible to do it much faster than that.

Being from Newcastle myself, I would like to point out that Newcastle Brown Ale (Dog as it would be called in Newcastle) is not lager.
