    The France-Italy World Cup Final

Ok, who would have thought that France would end up in the World Cup final once more

So what's your predictions ? I feel like Italy has better odds, but with Zidou in the game, it could be different.

    France

I wonder how often we will be reminded once they've won.

Italy probably deserve to be favourites, but their odds are too short in the outright winners market, for me. I shall be opposing them with my hard earned. ALLEZ LES BLEUS!

After the first 5 minutes of this game, Henry had been down, a yellow card had been given, Maldouf had been upended in the box, Zidane had taken a penalty that just scapped in, off the cross bar and it looked lik this was going to be a final full of colour and drama.

Sadly, apart from when ltaly equalized and then threatened from more corners, the rest of the game was a very lack lustre affair. ltaly dominated the first half but apart from their aerial supremacy at set pieces, never threatened. Wingers and wide backs set up many attacking drives with hard running from defence. All this good work came to nothing though as both teams lacked any semblance of cohesion or authority in the front third of the ground. Both defences were well organized, impossible to break down and genuine shots on goal were few and far between.

At half time with the scores tied at 1 - 1, France looked like they were going to struggle in the second half. However, to their credit it was the French who came out in the second half, with a renewed sense of purpose. Zidane who had been kept quiet for much of the first half started to get into the game a bit more. However both teams, and in particular the French, were guilty of trying to finesse the passes to their forwards too much. With so many bodies in the box, these passes never looked like getting through.

The game as a spectacle was dying, it was turning into a dour struggle, with both teams looking ahead to the inevitable penalty shoot out. The ltalians gave that impression more than the French. Play makers like Totti were having next to no impact on the game, and he was subbed during the second half of regulation time.

Nothing much happened during the first half of extra time, until Zidane got onto the end of a perfect cross deep into the box. His header was hit with great force and accuracy, and it was only the one handed acrobatics of the ltalian keeper Buffon, that denied the French a fairy tale win. Zidane also created a sensation in the second half of extra time, when he head butted one ltalian player in the sternum. The player went down, and after consulting with his line judge, the ref gave ZZ a well deserved red card. For him it was a terrible way to go out in his final game, but the ref who had a much better game than most of the players, got this decision right, like just about everything else he did last night.

So then it was down to the penalties. Even here there was little to separate the 2 teams. There were also no Lehman like heroics. Both keepers failed to get near the ball on any of the penalties taken. The error when it came, was a shot from Trezeguet, which hit the cross bar and bounced inside the field of play when it came down. All in all the most disappointing and lack lustre final l have seen since 1994, when ltaly lost the world cup final to Brazil on a penalty shoot out. Do they know any other way to play ?

    Result ; ltaly d. France 5 - 3 on penalties.
