Inglis' broken jaw sours Maroons lead

Queensland has drawn first blood in State of Origin II as they attempt to win an unprecedented fourth-straight State of Origin Series however any early celebrations were soured with Greg Inglis suffering a broken jaw. Any early momentum from the Blues was lost as the Maroons scored three unanswered tries in the first 25 minutes of the match to sprint to an 18-nil lead.
The Blues biggest issue seemed to be ball control with hooker Robbie Farah's passes struggling to find first receiver, and going to ground. Maroons captain Darren Lockyer made the most of a dropped ball metres from the line to score his team's third try of the night.
Greg Inglis scored the first try for the Maroons however, leading 12-nil halfway into the opening half, the Queensland star was the victim of a late hit by Blues five-eighth Trent Barrett. Inglis was forced off the field with a broken jaw and Barrett was put on report by referee Shayne Hayne with the Queensland centre forced off the field with a broken jaw.
Blues debutant David Williams also appeared to struggle under the bright lights of the Origin arena, and the young winger's second knock-on resulted in a gift four points for Folau just 16 minutes into the match.
New South Wales' first points of the match came in the 27th minute via a Hayne intercept – the Eels only State of Origin representative running 90 metres unchallenged to score.
Hayne, who was the Blues man of the match in Game One, was again causing difficulty for Queensland and the winger scored his second try of the match with two minutes remaining in the second half. Kurt Gidley missed the conversion and the score heading into the halftime break was 18-10 in favour of the Maroons.
There was strong doubt just minutes before players took to the field over the fitness of Queensland lock Dallas Johnson, however he ran out on to ANZ Stadium as part of the Maroons 17.
Johnson spent the countdown to kick-off on a saline drip in a big to play. Johnson topped the tackle count in Game One with 52 to his name, seven more than any other player on the field so his omission from tonight's team would be a massive blow. The situation is reminiscent of Queensland Origin legend Trevor Gillmeister coming off a drip in Game Three of the 1995 Origin Series to lead the Maroons to a 24-16 victory over the Blues.

    Maroons take half-time lead

Queensland has punished a series of woeful mistakes by New South Wales to open up an 18-10 half-time lead in the second State of Origin clash in Sydney.
Paul Gallen, David Williams and Ben Creagh all either threw errant passes or lost the ball in vulnerable positions and the Maroons swooped to score on each occasion as they seek a victory to take an unprecedented fourth straight series win.
It might have been worse for the Blues with the Maroons denied what seemed another try to Ashley Harrison by a knock-on ruling by video referee Tim Mander.
Winger Jarryd Hayne kept the home side in it, bagging a double including a 90-metre runaway effort from an intercept.
Queensland was over as early as the sixth minute after Sharks enforcer Gallen threw a wild pass which was scooped up by Israel Folau, who dashed 80 metres before being caught by Hayne and captain Kurt Gidley.
The Maroons quickly received a penalty for offside in the ensuing play and the decision to take the tap paid dividends with Greg Inglis breaching some flimsy defence to score.
Debutant winger Williams was the recipient of two bell-ringing hits from Maroons ring-in Willie Tonga, the second leading to a try for Folau.
The Broncos beanpole merely scooped the ball up and jinked his way through more pathetic Blues defence to bag his fifth Origin four-pointer.
Inglis was forced from the ground, replaced by Karmichael Hunt, after copping a swinging arm to the head from Trent Barrett which left the Melbourne star with concussion.
Sharks skipper Barrett was placed on report for his indiscretion.
But if the Blues were hoping it would swing momentum there way they had another thing coming with yet another handling error gifting Darren Lockyer the easiest of tries.
Another difficult pass was put down by Creagh and the Maroons captain swooped for Queensland's third four-pointer.
New South Wales hit back late in the half with an opportunist try of its own, Hayne diving over from dummy half after he had already picked up his side's first by intercepting what appeared to be another chance for more Queensland points to race 90 metres and score.
Queensland had a late scare prior to kick-off with a stomach virus affecting Nate Myles, Dallas Johnson, Mick Crocker and Lockyer, but they were all cleared to take part.

It wasn't pretty but was effective all the same as Queensland held out a surging New South Wales 24-14 in Sydney on Wednesday evening to claim an unprecedented fourth straight State of Origin series triumph.
    More to follow.

    It was a hard-fought game.

Basically it was a repeat of the first one.

Qld had a handy lead at the break, the blues pushed back really hard in the second and then we slammed it home at the end.

    Four in a row.

Maroons casualty ward creates Origin history

The Queensland team may have resembled a casualty ward but they were still able to re-write State of Origin history, with a 24-14 victory over New South Wales at ANZ Stadium. The Maroons, skippered by Darren Lockyer, wrapped up the 2009 Origin Series following their 28-18 win in Game One and also won an unprecedented fourth-straight.
Prior to kick-off, the Queensland team was struggling with lock Dallas Johnson spending the afternoon on a saline drip in a bid to play. Johnson topped the tackle count in Game One with 52 to his name, seven more than any other player on the field so his omission from the team would have been a massive blow. The situation was reminiscent of Queensland Origin legend Trevor Gillmeister coming off a drip in Game Three of the 1995 Origin Series to lead the Maroons to a 24-16 victory over the Blues.
Nate Myles, Michael Crocker and Darren Lockyer also appeared to be feeling the ill-effects of the stomach virus which swept through the Queensland side in the lead up to Game Two. Forwards Ben Hannant (knee), Sam Thaiday (knee) and Ashley Harrison (ribs) struggled with injury during the match. The greatest fears however, were reserved for Greg Inglis who was forced off the field mid-way through the first half with concussion and a suspected broken jaw. He will have scans tomorrow to confirm the seriousness of the injury.
Barrett was later charged with a reckless grade one strike and will face a minimum two-week ban if found guilty.
Queensland again made sure they had the last say in an Origin match, a try to hooker Cam Smith leaving the result in no doubt. Johnathan Thurston maintained his perfect record with the boot with his fourth conversion of the night.
The Blues got to within four points of the Maroons late in the second half, a try to winger David Williams earned the debutant some redemption after a horror night but nothing could come close to the uncompromising Queensland spirit.
Lockyer reacted with pride following the determined win.
"We did well to hang in there tonight," he said.
"We spoke at halftime about being composed ... in the end, defence got us home again."
Blues captain, Kurt Gidley was close to tears following the full-time whistle. The fullback spoke to Wide World of Sports' Andrew Voss.
"I don't know what to say. I'm shattered," Gidley said.
"We fought back well, but they're a great team."
Inglis was forced off the field with a concussion and a suspected broken jaw while Barrett was put on report by referee Shayne.
Williams also appeared to struggle under the bright lights of the Origin arena, and the young winger's second knock-on resulted in a gift four points for Folau just 16 minutes into the match.
New South Wales' first points of the match came in the 27th minute via a Hayne intercept – the Eels only State of Origin representative running 90 metres unchallenged to score.
Hayne was on par with his man of the match performance in Game One, and was again causing difficulty for Queensland. The Blues winger scored his second try of the match with two minutes remaining in the second half. Kurt Gidley missed the conversion and the score heading into the halftime break was 18-10 in favour of the Maroons.
A question mark now hangs over the Blues coach Craig Bellamy role with the side – no New South Wales coach has ever survived in the job after two series losses. Several of Bellamy's players could also find themselves omitted from Game Three later this month at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.
Halfback Peter Wallace again struggled in the middle of the field, Joel Monaghan was hopelessly exposed in defence on several occasions while questions remain over the fitness of Robbie Farah. The Blues hooker appeared restricted in his movement, passing poorly - he had started the match with rib cartilage damage sustained in the Tigers Round 14 match against the Eels.

    it was bladdy good though!

I was a bit worried in that second half, the maroons defense went to the shit, and they almost conceded a try a couple of times.

but they dug deep, settled, and then scored again, just to seal the bargain!

    woohoo!

Where are all the Blues supporters?

It was reported on tonight's news that Inglis's jaw wasn't broken, only bruised.

He's expected to play this weekend....and in the third SOE.
