    The World Cup

Err, yeah, catchy little thread this one.

Just somewhere to talk about the games/teams etc....

I thought Germany were a bit crap, but Costa Rica were truly awful.

Quite a few ugly people in the crowd as well, and the Oliver Kahn guy - no team should be allowed to win the world cup with him in the squad, especially not Germany.

Anyway, Bobby Moore's widow says England are going to win and I think she should know!

I enjoyed the Germany game - cracking goals....I was drunk as a sack by the time of the Polish game though. The BBC coverage was excellent, Shearer, O'Neil, Hanson and the v.good Mr Lineker. ITV had Sam Allderdyce, Stuart Pearce and Ruud Gullit....It looked like they being broadcast from a downstairs toilet - albeit one with a very large window looking out onto a football stadium....I never heard what they had to say, I had the sound down, but from lip-reading I think Rudd said something about how pet goats can sometimes chew carpets....I could be wrong, my lip-reading skills aren't up to much.

That's a pretty good line up for ITV, but they just can't seem to pull it off, can they???

F me, that's a good line up, almost the Brazil of punditry - plus they get all that extra time when ITV is trying to sell you Budweiser and shit like that.

Don't worry danbo, anything is better than Somchai and friends - good thing about the Germany game is that there wasn't a single "Supersave!!!" through the whole match - and as I (and you) had No hands Lehman as captains that was really funny.

Shame about the missing 30 minutes which had the only goal.

Hey, I enjoyed watching that royal stuff, the best thing was I could watch it on every channel - so I could flick through all of them and it never got disturbed by anything stupid, like the world cup!!!

Sounds like England did well in the first half, but they were fairly ordinary in the second. My only major complaints were Ashley Cole, who was passing to the toher team all the time and the ref who was fucking awful and looked stupid as well.

Still, it's a good result, Paraguay are not a bad team and they never looked like scoring.

    glad you said that.
i thought there was something wrong with my telly.

England looked like they were taking the piss to me, kind of like they knew they'd win, all cocky like, no fire. Fair enough i suppose, they did win without any expunsion of energy and as Nick, for once, rightly said Paraguay never looked like scoring, unless they did in the first 30 minutes when they might have but i don't know because i didn't see it.

It's the kind of thing that can break up marriages - I nearly said f your fin whatever to the mrs, but I've learnt that is not the thing to do, cos I did it 4 years ago when they interrupted the Brazil game.

I suppose she doesn't have the say about TV schedules and all that, but she could at least write to her local MP about it!

    Fucking louts.

That would never happen at a rugby game...

    Violence as England game screened
Violent confrontations involving up to 200 people that left 16 people injured have marred a screening of England's opening World Cup game in London.

Several arrests were also made at a showing in Liverpool after what was described as a "mini riot" broke out.

As a result police shut down the transmission, on big screens in Clayton Square, Liverpool and Canary Wharf.
John Rowland, who works in a shop in the area, said a number of people had sought refuge on the premises.

"Everything just kicked off into a riot and so we had to put the shutters down on the shop," he said.

"It is an absolute disgrace. This is the start of the World Cup - is this what we've got to look forward to? People were terrified."

I guess that because we invented the modern game (along with most other things) everyone assumes that we should do it better than everyone else.

    Sadly, this is not true.

I'm going to cheer for Brazil.
The only other country I'd consider living in besides Thailand.

Seems they are the safe bet. They've won the damn thing 5 times.

I've also discovered I've been fooled by the Aussie as well ... they don't exactly have a hostory of even qualifying for the World Cup. You guys are killin' me

I remember a World Cup some years ago where the last two teams - Brazil & Argentina were playing the last game in Maracana Stadium in Rio and Brazil lost. There were folks actually throwing themselves out of high-rise buildings following the game due to the dissapointment. Those people take their Soccer seriously!

After watching some of the matches, I don't know which team I like, but I know which team I despise. Fokin Argentina. What a bunch of pussies. An opposing player looks at them funny and they start writhing on the ground like someone whacked them in the knees with a baseball bat. Especially that long haired prick that plays defense for them. Just play the game, you jerks.
