I can remember when they said that no man could pole vault over 6 metres.

Then a marvel like Sergey Bubka come along. Amazing.

I dont think that was anything to do with concentration, just pure ability/skill. He looked like he was hardly thinking about it.

I don't see how you can differentiate.

pure ability + skill + total (the ability to ) concentration. Result = genius.

^^Yep Dave I would of given the fight to Hagler and it was a typical Vegas victory.

Brilliant performance by both boxers though.

The greatest show of sportsmanship was at the 1956 National Mile Championship in Melbourne. Every-one knew that if John Landy got a fast start in the early part of the race he would set a new world record.

In the race, Landy stopped and doubled backed to check on fellow runner Ron Clarke after another runner clipped Clarke's heel, causing him to fall early in the third lap of the race. Clarke had been leading the race, got back to his feet and started running again; Landy followed. Incredibly, in the final two laps Landy made up a large deficit to win the race, something considered one of the greatest moments in Australian sporting history.

Said the National Centre for History and Education in Australia, "It was a spontaneous gesture of sportsmanship and it has never been forgotten."

And they don't come much tougher than Johnny Sattler.

In the premiership decider of 1970 South Sydney were up against the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles. Approximately ten minutes into the game Sattler collapsed after being punched by Manly forward John Bucknall. He suffered a double fracture to his jaw but pleaded to team mate Mike Cleary, "Hold me up so they don't know I'm hurt". He was helped up and continued to play in the game. At half time Souths were leading 12-6 when his fellow team mates learnt about his injury.

During the interval he refused treatment and insisted he continue playing. He also told the side, "the next bloke who tries to cut me out of the play is in trouble," to prevent his team mates trying to protect him from further injury. At the end of the game South Sydney had scored 3 tries to nil in a 23-12 victory. He later went to hospital to receive treatment but only after receiving the Giltinan Shield and making an acceptance speech.
