    Origin of soccer

Was watching the History channel last and learned a little about the game of footie. Somebody tell me if any of the below are false:

    1. Soccer first appeared in China
    2. Soccer in present form is British influece.
    3. Rugby was born out of a difference of opinion on whether
    the hands should be used.
    4. Footie without hands is attributed to the Aristocrat class.
    5. Some guy named Artur is the best ever ... better than Pele even.
    6. Germany's win of the 1954 World Cup was first instance of equipment
making a difference over talent. Because of man who came up with
    the Adidas brand.

Thought it has something to do with some old King of theirs throwing scraps out the window (winder for Billy) and them fighting for for the biggest piece...

And some big old American saw him do it. Added pads, helmets, and throwing the damn ball as well. Actually the throwing did not really start until Knute Rockne at Notre Dame University.

    1. Soccer first appeared in China

Soccer evolved independently all over the world, but the earliest found so far is in China.

    2. Soccer in present form is British influece.

    English, yes.

    3. Rugby was born out of a difference of opinion on whether
    the hands should be used.

Probably, yes. But most 'experts' agree that it wasn't young William Webb Ellis who took the ball in his arms and ran while playing Rugby School's already distinctive version of football.

    4. Footie without hands is attributed to the Aristocrat class.

    Chav class I reckon.

    5. Some guy named Artur is the best ever ... better than Pele even.

Never heard of him. Pele is/was the best.

    6. Germany's win of the 1954 World Cup was first instance of equipment
making a difference over talent. Because of man who came up with
    the Adidas brand.

A bit before my time, but I heard something similar.

Yeah, that was the same show. They said the guy had to use hair straightener to appear not to be black.

The show claimed it was this guy Artur who really popularized the sport with his unheard of ability and then the advertising machine of Manchester United that really brought the sport where it is today.

Here is an interesting post I found on what Americans think of soccer:

"Put quite simply, if there were a competition for the "most boring, least action packed sport on Earth," soccer would be a strong contender for the crown. I mean, almost every sport you can imagine has more going on than soccer. Baseball, golf, cricket, WNBA basketball, slow pitch softball, ping pong, freeze tag, foosball, you name it, it's all a thrill-a-minute rocket ride down the side of Mt. Everest compared to footie.

Soccer is like watching the "Blair Witch Project" for the sixth time, counting grains of sand on the beach, or trying to sing every verse of "37,000 bottles of beer on the wall". How all of these "soccer hooligans" can stay awake through an entire game, much less muster the energy to riot afterwards, is beyond me.

Moreover, soccer is such a tedious "slug race on a sheet of flypaper" sport, that the only enjoyment most Americans get out of it is knowing that when we win, the fact that we don't care is like a shiv to the heart of soccer fans from whiny, ungrateful, countries around the world who complain incessantly about our country." (Michael Mandelbaum)

^ or you could just briefly answer the question..... :P

no - it was a serious comment, i actually like basketball.

but i remember reading something or watching a show that was saying baseball was declining for these different reasons and american kids are turnign to all the other sports etc

partially because of the players strikes and so on....

You read that sort of thing from time to time. But I don't believe it to be true at all. Baseball at the Pee Wee, High, School, college and professional ranks is just about the same as it has been for the last 3 decades.
