boxing predictions - Calzaghe, Jones, Pavlik...

Now that Vitali has retaken top spot of the heavyweights, what about the actually decent fighters? Your predictions.

    Jones vs Calzaghe
Much as I love Welsh Joe, Jones may well have enough craft to pull out a convincing win. Odds are against it probably, but sneaking suspicions don't obey odds, and neither does RJ. Calzaghe has the form and momentum, but was virtually out on his feet at the end of rounds 6 and 7 against Hopkins, even though he pulled out a W.
Prediction: Convincing points win either way. I'll go with Jones.

    Pavlik vs Hopkins
Pavlik is one dimensional, and Hopkins the king of wile. Yet youth, momentum, stamina - all points to Pavlik.
Prediction Pavlik's pressure too much for BHop who gets put in retirement.

Should it come to it - Calzaghe would dismatle Pavlik

Boxing predictions- I predict in 5 years boxing will realize it's been dead for 10. All hail MMA! Let these motherfuckers take it to the mat and let the strongest/fastest/smartest guy win.

I am worried about Calzaghe in this one because Calzaghe has always relied on the speed of his punches to overwhelm his opponents who are usually bigger than him but not as agile.
In Roy Jones he may have met his match, a bigger guy, probably punches harder than Calzaghe and the speed and agility of Jones are more impressive than any other boxer Joe has fought.

I think it will make for an intersting fight and hope that Joe comes out on top

    As for Pavlik v Hopkins couldn't give a f*ck

You are seriously doing your man, sorry our man , a serious disservice.

If this fight took place 10 years ago I would have put the shirt off my back on RJJ beating Calzaghe as he was a different class and had everything required of a boxer and the fact that he won titles at many (4 or 5 off the top of my head) weights justifies his place as a Hall of Fame-r.

However, he is now well and truly past his best and moving up and down the weights has took it's toll on his body and his hand speed and movement and to a lesser extent his power is no-where near what it was in his prime.

To me this will be a comfortablish points win for Calzaghe. He desperately wants to go out with his 0 in tact and is dying to get RJJ's name on his record. I just think Calzaghe will out work him and throw more punches and win by maye 3 or 4 rounds. RJJ is still dangerous though and Calzaghe will definitely need to be 100% because he's a crafty fucker but just can't see English Joe losing this one.

As for Pavlik/Hopkins. A lot like the above for me. Hopkins again an amazing fighter in his day but his day has long gone. His fight against Calzaghe was almost embarrasing the way he was just clinching, holding on, smothering and generally just there to spoil Calzaghe and then throw a few punches in the last minute to try and nick the rounds. Which he failed miserably.

However, to me Pavlik is being hyped up way too much. Yes he can bang we all know that but he is also a very straight foward, one dimensional fighter. It will be interesting to see if he can't knock Hopkins out with that right, which would be no mean feat, how he adapts his game plan and whether he can switch and out box Hopkins who you have to say has been one of the best defensive boxers in history.

Hopkins will fight exactly the same way as he did against Calzaghe constantly spoiling and closing down the range so Pavlik can't get his big bombs off. Personally, again I can see this one going to points as well with Pavlik just shading it so the new great Yank hope can go on and call out the winner of Calzaghe/RJJ but it really wouldn't surprise me if Hopkins grinded, bullied, and nicked himself a victory.

That reflects my own worry. I still think Calzaghe wins on paper (as outlined by CB79), but there is that nagging worry that Jones can out-Calzaghe Calzaghe's own game. Its the riskiest fight he could have picked at this point, and with little reward since they'll all say RJJ was past it etc... if Calzaghe wins. BTW CB79 Joe Calzaghe is NOT English (and would box your ears for saying he is).

Pavlik should be able to wear out Hoopkins, but not without a lot of problems in the early rounds, opening up a Calzaghe-Pavlik fight, that Joe wins with ease.

Calzaghe was born in Hammersmith, London. Makes him English to me. Good 'ole English Joe.

Anyway, stunning perfromance by B-Hop last night and he rolled back the years to produce a performance of 10 years ago.

Have to say my worries about Pavlik turned out to be true and he was truly outclassed and was made to look completely one dimensional. He did not have a Plan B and Hopkins was toying with him in the end.

Hopkins showed his class at the end as well telling Pavlik not to let this fight destroy him and to go back down to middleweight and rule it like he did.

    Good fight. Enjoyed it.

Watched Galzaghe a few times, last time at the MEN about 4-5 years ago. My money is on him.

After Hopkin's performence it makes you realise just how good Calzaghe was when they fought.
Nods to Popkins for a great fight. Other than Jones there is not much out there for him unfortunately. Though I'd like to see him beat Jermain Taylor.

It's true Calzaghe was born in Hammersmith, but I would not call him 'English' if he had a few pints in him.

Hearts and minds of the people..... Joe has made his own decision about what flag he fights under.

Colin Cowdrey was born in India, doesn't make him an Indian.

Don't try and get your money back this fight !

I still can't decide who I think will win it. Jones has everything to fight for, and his losses have come from big punches - which Calzaghe does not posses. Still, Calzaghe is a shade faster and younger....

If Jones wins, I'd love to see him move up to heavyweight and run rings around David Haye and his oversized gob.

Anybody know any bars in Bangkok that has Setanta sports? They would have to open at 9am and i would have to hope main fight hadn't started yet because the coverage starts at 6am thai time but how long they are going to build it up for and how long the othe fights last is anybody's guess.

    Oversized gob?

Have to say I haven't found Haye gobby at all and in fact his comments recently have been refreshingly honest. He knows he hasn't got the best of chin's so rather than fuck about fighting stiffs he is fighting a top 10 fighter (sort of) and is then calling out the rest of a distinctly average HW division.

Fair fucks I say and can't wait to see how far he gets.

Got to hand it to Calzaghe. Though its probably been done before on some scale, it must count as a new move sticking your head right into the Peek-a-boo defense. It works too, if your hands are low and ready to fire. Jones tried several times to copy him in this but failed. Rather like Toney tried to copy RJJs move in their fight, only to be decked.

Calzaghe's showbaoting in the early rounds was just like Prince Hamed when he was getting busted up by Barrera, and I was certain he would lose. Pity he had to try and show off in the last round.

I still think Haya is gobby. His smarmy obnoxious gloating after knocking out Big Mac nailed it for me. Though he is a Brit, and undeniably talented, I'd love to see the well mannered Klitscho's knock him senseless. Haye's ridiculous verbal attack on Wlad on the escalators (its on youtube) showed the difference between these two.
