    Shooting Range and Fishing

I have friends coming in January that are hunting and fishing addicts. I was thinking of taking them to a shooting range to try weapons they haven't fired before. Being Canadian there are many restrictions back home. Also was thinking about one of the fishing venues both as day trips. Anyone have first hand experience they could please share?

From what I have seen the fishing in Thailand is pretty crap.

There was an interesting thread a while ago about blowing away cows with a rocket launcher in Cambodia.

There is an indoor shooting range near Thanya Plaza on Silom that offers all sorts of weapons to fire if you are in or near Bangkok. I can get details tomorrow if you want

I found this link, however it doesn't appear to be the same range although I think it is similar - I will call in the Silom range tomorrow, get and post the details on here

As far as the fishing goes why don't you take a trip down to the coast and hire a boat out for a day or two. I went night fishing a few years back, a friend and I hauled out 9 very decent sized Barricuda's between us.

If you want to stay on land and can travel, have a look here

That place charges 50 baht a bullet, which seems very expensive.

Apparently there is a range opposite Wat Pho inside a small army base which only charges 10 baht a bullet.

There are a couple of shooting ranges in Phuket if they come down this way - nevr been there but they seem very popular.
Also deep sea fishing and guided freshwater fishing for big catfish, pacu, snakehead talapia and gourami -was running both a year or so ago and still have contacts

So, to summarise all my knowledge of the subjects to the OP, Samui has this:

The big Barracuda's in the sea and a shooting range.

But indeed, one has to suffer the building site that Samui has turned into.

It's not unique to Samui. All of Asia suffers the same problem.

Fishing here can be fun. There's a place I go on Naramin Road Soi 42 called Bung Saam Lan (Spelling) in Bangkok, its basically a fish farm where all you need to do is cast in to catch a monster. Fish range from 20kg up to 300kg and the average catch is about 35kg (about the same size as a small thai girl) There's beers and food and you can even rent an expert to cast and bait up for you if your too drunk or lazy. All you need to do is reel them in. They have Mekon Delta Cat fish, Siamise Carp and another that i cant remember the name, but their the big ones. (maybe Aiyapria?)

As far as sea fishing goes, I think that this is the start of the season. The sea should be clearing up anytime now and I've had some great days out catching baracuda. I've only fished in the Anadaman so have no idea about the Gulf but you can catch some real whopers. You can rent a boat off a local and he'll take you to the prime spots. Then whatever you catch you can store on a shrimping boat out at sea and then collect it on your way home.

For shooting, there's a range down Samui that I went to about 6 or 7 years ago that had a good selection of weapons. Its easy to find and unless gun laws have got tighter you'll have a good day.

As promised I went to the shooting office - I think it mainly caters for the millions of Japanese who seem to hover around Thanya Plaza. The website is bonk - htttp://bangkokshooting.com so I scanned the brochure - pics below:

I used it for the fish and chips in my pub after we'd hauled in the nine biggies. Went down a treat. But whilst googling that picture, I noticed a caption that read "Don't eat Barracuda" - Whoops!

Never tried barracuda, but barramundi (pla kapong in Thai) has to be one of the tastiest fish in the world. Love the stuff.

Barracuda is good, I caught two off the coast of Koh Pai Amm (spelling). One black fin and one yellow fin. I think the yellow fin tasted better if i remember correctly.

If you are going to Phnom Penh or Ho Chi Minh the shooting ranges there are far cheaper than anything in Thailand. The guns are in worse condition but there is more of a selection and you can fire up to .50 cal belt fed machine guns and RPGs as well as hand grenades and 7.62 GPMGs like the M60.

There are also a lot less rules and you can do stuff like shoot live chickens and shoot M60s from the hip if you are that way inclined.
