I used to love the Castrol 6 hour bike races. They would get the latest big bikes and race them flat out round the montain come rain or shine and at that time a lot of racing was stopped in the wet. I remember the Kawasaki Z900 being unbeatble for years then Yamahas XS 1100. They were pretty much stock bikes.

    Do they still hold it?

I used to watch it start to finish every year when I was a teenager then take my trail bike out and thrash it till I inevitably fell off and come home with some bark off.

Well, my memory must be going, it was held at Amaroo until '83 then it went to Oran park.

Sorry, it has nothing to do with Mt Panorama...

Great memories of GTHO's and XU1's battling it out A great day in. Don't think much of the new cars though, can't tell them apart!

I still remember Alan Hales & Neill Chivas winning the Castrol 6 hour in 1979 on a Suzuki GS1000.
(I'd bought my GS1000 a few weeks before)

I think production car/bike racing is far more enjoyable than any of the F1, MotoGP or V8 Supercars.

BTW if any of you happen to have a GTHO, A9X, XU1, GT laying around you are sitting on a goldmine. GTHO's go for big money now ($250 000 AUD!)

Mate gave me a "Unique Cars" mag from Oz, couldn't belieive the price of Aussie muscle cars. American iron is relatively cheap in comparison.

Can add the Valiants to that too; Pacers and Chargers (especially the E49) fetch serious dosh these days.

There was one that went at auction recently for AU$400,000. Had some certain heritage to it that I can't recall right now.
    XU1
I had one (LJ GTR XU1) that I sold for NZ$4,000. Roughly a year later the same car was worth $10,000 and lord only knows how much now.

I know, I used to have an XU1 as well and had a good cry while reading the mag in the bog. My mrs even asked if I was alright as I was groaning (and not the sort when you are having a hard time with number 2's.)

My brother in law has probably the best kept original big bang "Brock Commodore" anywhere in the world. I will ask him to send me a photo so I can post it.

Had all the above except for the legendary GTHO. Could not afford to run the beast let alone buy one but what a car.

Mate you have triggered some great memories there.

Those of Colin Bond, Alan Moffat, Brocky of course and that bloke who ran over a boulder when somebody rolled it across the track at the top of the mountain. Johnson I think his name was and a banana bender as well.
Was leading the race at the time and then some cnut fcuked it for him. Quite sad!

But anyway a great race if not the greatest anywhere in the world.

Apparently I can't green you right now (must of hit you yesterday for something) but will when I can and thanks for the thread mate.

^ Thinking about buying one of these beauties next year. Any idea how much they go for these days?

    Bathurst- great race.

Sorry to be a spoilsport, but the Isle of Man circuit is even better- for the spectator.

I sold my Hemi Charger 265 for peanuts, years ago.

There was a news report on the weekend about a guy in Caboolture (I think?) who had his two 'classic' cars stolen. One was a 350 Monaro and the other was a HK or HT Brougham, both in mint condition. He was actually crying in the interview.

Nah its okay mate. Was hoping I might be able to pick one up for 7-8k for driving around town. But with the prices some of the chaps are quoting above I might be dreaming. Would cost an arm and a leg to run too these days .

Does anyone remember the race where a piece of a beer carton blew onto the track, got stuck on the leaders grille (GT Falcon I think) then the car ended up overheating and lost the race? Classic. That is what Bathurst is all about. Bloody VB it was too!

That was John Morris 1971. The same year Bill Brown rolled his Falcon along the fence at McPhillemy Park after a tyre blew at approx 100mph.

    Some more memories here:
