Got to agree with that. Aussies only put effort into sport and nothing else from what I have seen (unless you count the female preoccupation of eating).

Britain back to third after another cycling gold, and a good chance of getting 3 more tomorrow.

2 USA 19 22 25 66
3 Great Britain 12 7 8 27
4 Australia 11 10 12 33

So...by your logic, a country with ONE gold medal and nothing else, such as say, Tunisia or THAILAND is a greater Olympic power than one that has 200 Silvers? I don't quite catch the logic.

I do agree there should be and probably is a weighting system ascribed to the various medals and events, and I suppose lots of people will be arguing about that. But, to maintain that a country that has a lot of depth in medal athletes, but no gold, such as Belarus, is somehow inferior to a country with only one gold, such as Tunisia is nonsense.

It's winning that counts. There should be no prizes for 'almost winners'.

I agree

So how to resolve this dilemma. How about a system that gives three points for gold, two for silver and one for bronze. On that system, China outpoints the USA by a narrow 116 to 109 which is probably a fair representation of how things have played out.
But what about the fact China's population is around four times that of the USA? With a bigger athletic pool to draw on, China should theoretically be well ahead of the Americans. That may well be the case in years to come; right now China is still an emerging nation at the Olympics whereas the US is well-established and with proven medal-producing systems in place.
Let's assume then that a points system for medals won is divided by population to get a per capita measure of how well the leading nations have performed so far at the games.
On this system, the two powerhouses are New Zealand and Australia.
New Zealand has 10 points for two golds, a silver and two bronze, which is divided by a population of four million for a score of 2.5. Australia has 47 points divided by a population of 20 million for a score of 2.35.
It's a fluid system given that 24 hours earlier New Zealand had no medals and a score of 0.0. And if American swimmer Michael Phelps was a nation of one he would have a score of 24: eight gold medals divided by one.
But for what it's worth, Kiwis can bask in the continued glory of Super Saturday by revelling in the fact that for a small country we do pretty well.
Taken from It's a small comfort that statistically, NZ rules - New Zealand's source for sport, rugby, cricket & league news on Stuff.co.nz

Maybe they can create copper, tin and paper medals for fourth, fifth and sixth places.

Give you guys something to cheer about.

The amount of funding sport has received in Australia it would be a travesty if they weren't the overall per capita leaders in Olympic medals won.

Since Britain has upped the funding to it's athletes due to winning the 2012 Olympic bid you can see the results.

It certainly destroys the stereotype of the pasty, unhealthy, beer-bellied Brit.

In that respect, it's easy to see why China has become dominant in summer Olympics. They sponsor and pamper the kids from cradle to gym, and have set as an absolute national priority for a number of years the dominance we're now seeing.

The US, UK or any other such nation could never and would never arrange such a degree of public tax money funding for athletes.

I also find it interesting to add up all the former Soviet states and see how that compares with America and China. Still interesting comparisons. **(if you do that, you get 18 golds, only two behind the US)

NOW, let's see China try to do the same at the winter Olympics. Fat chance.....

Ever been to the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs? Some athletes live there for periods of months or years. Not quite from the cradle, but a lot of taxpayer bucks get stuffed into that place.

Similar facilities exist, I would imagine, in most developed countries.

^Yes, I have been there. Very impressive. But, US taxpayers would not allow the lavish spending we've seen by China. China leadership doesn't have to answer to any of its citizens on this.

They have spent big on the Olympic venues but training facilities, they send some of them to Western nations to use their resources.

Aussie coach sells training program secrets to China - report

BEIJING (AFP) — An Australian swim coach has sparked a storm after admitting selling the training program used by his protege Jessica Schipper for "big money" to the Chinese girl who beat her at the Olympics.
Ken Wood sold his top-secret training methods, which transformed Schipper into a world-record breaking 200m butterflyer, to the Chinese coach of Liu Zige, according to News Ltd newspapers in Australia on Sunday.
