Around the world in solo - Yachting - new record

AMAZING FEAT

Trimaran IDEC crossed the finishing line off Brest on Sunday 20th January 2008 at 00h39'58 At the age of 51, Francis Joyon is once again the fastest solo yachtsman around the world having completed the voyage in 57 days, 13 hours, 34 minutes and 6 seconds. He has shattered the previous record, held since 2005 by the British yachtswoman, Ellen MacArthur by 14 days, 44 minutes and 27 seconds.

It is truly an incredible performance: while he thought it was possible to bring the time down to below 70 days (the time to beat was 71 days and 14 hours), the sailor from Locmariaquer in Southern Brittany has brought it down to below 60 days and even to below 58 days. On board IDEC, Francis Joyon has covered more than 26 400 nautical miles at the astonishing average speed of 19,09 knot

Wiki says :

A turbosail is a naval propulsion system invented by Jacques-Yves Cousteau and used on the Alcyone. It consists of an airfoil, vertical and grossly ovoidal tube, with a mobile flap which improves the separation between the intrados and extrados. An aspiration system pulls air into the tubes, and is used to create an important depression on one side of the sail ; propulsion occurres perpendicularly to the pressure. In this way, the "sails" act as wings, with air moving slower on one side, creating drag. Standard engines can then be used in conjunction with the turbo sails. These in turn can be coordinated with computers to control the angles, suction power, and rotation of the sails.
The efficiency of the system is not well documented. When the Alcyone was launched in 1985, it was suggested that tankers and other large vessels would soon install turbosails as a mean to decrease fuel consumption.[1]. The system was intended to power the Calypso II, which has yet to be built.
The Alcycone reported a 1/3 fuel savings, and a larger commercial vessel had a 15% increase in fuel efficiency over a three year study (see "external links" for references).
The system bears similarities with Anton Flettner's Rotorschiff, a different design based on the Magnus effect.

Seems abandonned somehow, they talk about fitting huge high sails to the tankers now instead...

I remember something about that one with 2 air foils instead of masts and sails, but never heard about it again after it was launched.

But I just wonder what those underwater foils are made of on the tri? Don't think that they will hold up long and I sure would like more info on them tho.

Weird thing wind power!
As an apprentice I worked for a short time on wind powered generators with De Havilland Aircraft
Their concept was a prop on top of a tower that used the air sucked out of the trailing edge of the blades ( hollow steel with perforations ) to create a low pressure inside the tower and the generator was in the base of the tower. Air inlet was at the tower base and the incoming air drove a turbine
and the generator. Neat idea but never caught on !!! ( or worked well!)
Think that was how it was meant to work but it was 45 years ago so be kind!!! LOL

I was only in the prop balancing dept!

Back to the hydroptere...

Few websites existing : l'Hydroptère

Set to go 50 Knots soon ! and circumnavigate the globe by 40 days...

On the website:

In Jules Verne’s footsteps…
The two new challenges launched by Alain Thébault and lHydroptère team extend the technological and geographical limits of the project.
Building l’Hydroptère.ch, a lab model boat which will “fly” over Lake Geneva and around the world with l'Hydroptère maxi, give the project a new impulse.

Three boats to attempt all major records: absolute speed, Atlantic, Pacific and round-the-world navigation.

With the development of l’Hydroptère maxi, Alain Thébault and his team are pursuing Jules Verne’s dream.

l’Hydroptère maxi will benefit from the experience and know-how acquired after many years of trials and adjustments.
The existing carbon bird is a real trial platform whose purpose is to allow a perfect understanding of the functioning of a hydrofoil.
Today, l’Hydroptère is an extremely reliable and highly performing craft, and the team is ready to build two new boats.

The model for Lake Geneva, l’Hydroptère.ch, will be used essentially to test configurations and behaviours, knowledge which will be used to design l’Hydroptère maxi.

This maxi trimaran will measure approximately 30 meters long, with a 32-meter span. This size should enable her to react better in choppy seas. l’Hydroptère maxi’s versatility will be fundamental.

The speeds expected for this maxi are very high and she should be able to sail round the world and beat the existing record (50 days), with the ultimate goal of approaching 40 days

Thats bloody amazing, the top speed I ever reached on a mono was about 18/20 Knots, full kite and 40 Knots of breeze, surfing on quite big waves, that kept my arsehole well puckered up.
No doubt about it, the Froggies are the absolute masters when it comes to building and sailing these big Multis.

Over 10 on a mono is good allready !

more speed more lenght often for monos... the rules change wth the multi...and now they fly ? sail ?...but they reach speed of 40 over...

The container ships go at around 40 knots as well... See those disapear on the Horizon in 15 minutes form a yacht...

horizon at SL is around 4nm thus 16Kts for 15min's ,

Maersk were doing 22Kts with the new vessels but back to 18-20 with fuel prices bitting .

24.7 for my top speed and yes the sphincter was tiny especially given it was night time .
