    Tiger lynched by announcer

Announcer apologizes for 'lynch Tiger' remark

You certainly have to file Kelly Tilghman's on-air, on-camera comments during the Golf Channel's coverage of the Mercedes-Benz Championship under the "What was she thinking?" column.

During their usual post-round banter as they wrapped up Day 2 at the Plantation Course at Kapalua, Tilghman and cohort Nick Faldo discussed young players who could possibly challenge Tiger. Faldo, ever the joker, said perhaps the youngsters should "gang up (on Tiger) for a while." The pair laughed a bit before Tilghman responded by saying, "Lynch him in a back alley." The pair chuckled awkwardly before moving on.

The Golf Channel said it received a limited number of complaints regarding the comment.

Tilghman, realizing her faux pas, explained her comments during the final-round broadcast despite the possibility she could have swept the incident under the mat.

"I've reached out to Tiger to make an apology, and I've done the same with our viewers," Tilghman said.

"I can assure you that there was never any intention to offend anyone. I'm sorry for any misunderstanding."
Attempts to reach Woods or his agent, Mark Steinberg of IMG, were unsuccessful. A Golf Channel spokesman said no disciplinary action is planned, "other than the mistake she made is regrettable and an extreme learning experience for her."

I don't get it. If she was referring to Faldo or Mickelson and said that, nobody would have batted an eye. Besides, Tiger's an Asian African-American (snigger).

What if she had spoken about lynching VJ Singh? OK or not OK?

Much like Barack Obama. He's black, sort of. Does all the PC bullshit apply to him?

The point is, I think, that racism isn't a limited concept.

The term "lynch/ed/ing" has specific negative connotations for those of African-American heritage but not for those from other ethnic backgrounds. Similarly calling someone other than an Asian "gook" is pretty meaningless because it's a term based on a specific race and/or racial characteristic - that the terms are meant to denigrate based on those same factors is what makes it a) racist; b) offensive to a person of that race.

Therefore you can't simply say that because it's not offensive to Person W of X ethnic background that it automatically follows it shouldn't be offence to Person Y of Z ethnic background. The term "PC" applies sure, "Personal Commonsense".

Apparently so! Remember the stir Fuzzy Zeller caused with his "watermelon and fried chicken" remark when Tiger won his first Masters. Pretty much finished Fuzzy's career.

Howard Cosell, one of the all-time greatest announcers was done when he claimed blacks in college football ran faster than the whites. He was around black athletes his entire career -- interviewing them, calling the competition, I believe the friendship between he and Mohammed Ali was genuine.

His "fast little monkey" comment didn't help.

Ron Atkinson wins for his "He's a lazy black ****" comment made when he thought the adverts were on.

The point is that mostly well-meaning announcers say what they think are positive comments, ultimately get fired for those same comments because they're not politically complimentarally enough.

    It's racial bullshit in reverse.

Imagine if a Paki were to win the British Open. Half the announcers in London would be schleping their skills.

Sure is. Too many over sensitive folks these days. Tilghman's utterance I'm sure was off the cuff and would have been said by just about anyone. Just another example of media and some special interest groups stirring the shit to divide people. In fact IMO, it may well be considered a very nonracial thing to say given she probably doesn't even think of Tiger as black!! It is a common phrase in the US. Even the cowboy movies use the term all the time and never in the context of a KKK lynch mob.

I've had several visitors come to see me in Thailand since I moved here a year ago. Thrity percent of that figure have been African Americans.

They are no more, no less than whites. They understand that. Most non Americans don't.

Someone makes what's considered to be a racially offensive comment, they get censured for it.

Used to be that you were censured purely for the colour of your skin. Used to be that you were denied the same opportunites as others purely on the basis of the colour of your skin. Used to be you could be persecuted, beaten, and even killed purely on the basis of the colour of your skin.

Have things improved, undoutably. Have things improved to the point that there's no longer racism, no. So reverse recism? Meh, suck it up boys.

True, it's not the colour of ones skin than makes someone backward, but their upbringing. Most Australians are white, but obviously illiterate.

Rampant in the UK, I'm sad to say.
