    Super Rugby 2019

Time for the 24th edition of Super Rugby. Fifteen teams from Argentina, South Africa, Australia, Japan, and New Zealand will battle for the top prize.

The competition kicks off 15 February, and plays through to the final without a break for the June Internationals as this is RWC year.

    Odds:
    Crusaders 3-1
    Hurricanes 4-1
    Chiefs 15-2
    Highlanders 8-1
    Lions 9-1
    Waratahs 14-1
    Los Jaguars 25-1
    Brumbies 25-1
    Blues 33-1
    Stormers 50-1
    Rebels 50-1
    Sharks 60-1
    Bulls 66-1
    Reds 100-1
    Sunwolves 500-1

Both the Crusaders and Hurricanes deserve their short odds if based on the quality of their respective first-fives - Richie Mo'unga and Beauden Barrett. The Chiefs can be relied on to play some excellent footie and with the likes of big Brodie Retallick and the exciting play of Damian Mackenzie they may well take enough scalps to see them at the top of the ladder. The Highlanders have the great scrumhalf Aaron Smith and out the back fullback Ben Smith and scoring machine Waisake Naholo. They're a scrappy team that surprise a lot of teams and they should be in the quarter finals at the end of the regular season. The Blues? Who the hell knows? The Auckland NPC side had a stellar year and looked loaded with young talent. But can they get their shit together? Dunno.

The Aussie conference will muddle along and will have have at least one team in the quarter finals due to the conference nature of the competition.

The South Africa conference is a bit wide open. Los Jaguars looked pretty good last year, but their great coach Mario Ledesma has moved on to coach the national side Los Pumas. The Lions still have the goods to win the conference for the third year running, yet the Sharks may surprise everyone and take the top spot. The once powerful Bulls and Stormers franchises are in rebuilding mode so don't expect much from them.
    Pues, aquí estamos.

If you mean the Blues @33-1 to take the silverware, it'd not be a bad wager. There's some good young talent coming up in that franchise. It'll be interesting to see how the Blues play old fella centres Sonny Bill Williams and Super Rugby returnee Ma'a Nonu.

I've been seeing some reports that Mathieu Bastareaud is considering a move to Super Rugby next year with the Sharks.

Dunno if there's anything to it but I've always respected any NH player that has been willing to take what is almost certainly a pay-cut to have a crack in the SH.

Just had a squiz at the Canterbury Crusaders' roster. Crikey! So much talent there. The front row is absolutely loaded with solid performers - Franks, Moody, Alaalatoa, and Tim Perry at prop and three excellent hookers in Andrew Makalio, Ben Funnell, and Codie Taylor. The only area that I see as problematic is the depth at loose forwards (and they're not actually all that depleted). Taufua and Todd at 6 and 7 are class and of course Kieran Reed at number eight. Tom Sanders and Whetukamokamo Douglas should expect a lot of playing time this season. There are a lot of excellent young blokes such as George Bridge out the back (a scoring machine with both the Crusaders and Canterbury's provincial side last year), and Braydon Ennor in the midfield to fill in for Ryan Crotty and Jack Goodhue who will both see a bit of time off due to it being a World cup year.

This is going to be an enjoyable season.

    Tis!

And speaking of loosies the Mighty Highlanders have quite a mix with six All Blacks in Dixon, Frizell, Squire, Hemopo, Whitelock and Hunt and then also have Mikaele-Tu'u and Lentjes to throw in the mix.

    Do it for Bender boys!

    Super Rugby Round 1

    Kickoff times local (and TST)

    Friday, 15/02/19

    Chiefs v Highlanders 1935 (1335)
    Brumbies v Rebels 1945 (1545)

    Saturday, 16/02/19

    Blues v Crusaders 1935 (1335)
    Waratahs v Hurricanes 1945 (1545)
    Sunwolves v Sharks 1855 (1755)
    Bulls v Stormers 1715 (2215)
    Los Jaguares v Lions 1840 (0440 Sun)
    Reds (bye)

    ********************************************

    hnz picks for round 1

    Chiefs v Highlanders -- Chiefs by 8
    Brumbies v Rebels -- Brumbies by 5
    Blues v Crusaders -- Sadists by 10
    Tahs v Canes -- Hurricanes by 9
Sunwolves v Sharks -- upset special Sunwolves by 3
    Bulls v Stormers -- Bulls by 5
Los Jaguares v Lions -- Jaguares by 3

Sunwolves winning would be a major upset, but I reckon with the addition this year of Kiwis Rene Ranger and brothers Dan and Kara Pryor to the mix along with Kiwi returnee Hayden Parker, the Sunwolves just may surprise.

Lions are also favoured over the Lions, but the Jo'burg outfit may find that the Argies may play the kind of footie that saw them pull out a six game winning streak last season (two of the wins on the road against NZ opposition, a feat that no other Aussie of Saffa conference team was able to do).

    Roll on Soup 2019!!

Game of the round this one... Or at least potentially.

Blues resurgence or yet more of the same dross??

    *Shocked face*

Genuinely didn't know Ranger was kitting for them this season. He's a beast!

Yeah, I had no idea either until I had a look at the Sunwolves' roster. Ranger is a good pick up for this Asian side. I suspect that he was seen by the Blues as surplus as they have Sonny Bill and Ma'a Nonu in the midfield.

    For sure.

Shame he never really found his footing in the All Blacks he's a hell of a player and awesome to watch.

Just had a look at the squad myself and agree with you, I wouldn't snooze on them. I see that Micheal 'Son of Walter' Little is back also. He's no mug either.

Crackin' good match. Chiefs 27 30 Highlanders. Landers pull it out in the final few minutes with a man down.

    Wow!

Blues 22 24 Crusaders. Whew...what a match. The young Blues kicker Plummer could have leveled it with a conversion. He then drifted a penalty kick off to the right with a couple minutes remaining. Crusader class shows through, but the Blues look the goods.

That second penalty try was a little bit harsh in my opinion.

Still what a cracking start to the comp. There have been some great games.
