The Bulldogs beat West Tigers quite easily tonight with their new young players improving with every match.

And that's after the Tigers beat the bunnies very easily last week.

    What a crazy season.

Yeh, I was tipped the Doggies @ 5 1/2 start and thought NAH.

As you said, beat the Bunnies and (a post origin) StGeorge the week before.

Nice to see JT get a last grasp home win before he retires.

After Tigers loss it just about seals the top 8 for the rest of the season now.

I wouldn't have touched that bet @ 1000/1. Mathematically, the Tigers could (and still can) make the 8 where as the Doggies are gone. Be very wary of putting your money anywhere near teams that are playing for nothing at this time of year!.

Having said that, the Tigers simply didn't show up yesterday which is not like them at all especially with so much to play for. It's been a season of upsets, the very best tipsters this year are running at around 65% which is abysmal. Last year an 82% average was considered good.

Warriors 36-12 loss to the Titans gives the Tigers a slither of hope to still make the top 8.

I would have rathered a Broncos loss to the Sharks, but will take anything that gives us a bit of hope.

Well, that NRL round will do me
It has to the be the most unpredictable season of the NRL that I've ever watched.

    Point in case ...
The Warriors had EVERYTHING to play for. When leading @ 1/2 time, this season they haven't been headed.
They have the best 'away' record of any team this season and have beaten the Titans something like 11 from 12
    in recent games.
They are cling onto 8th position. They go into oranges just ahead. Then get smashed by the Titans!
    ---
The doggies beat the Tigers and Penrith climb out from under the Bus with 12 minutes to go and score better then
    a point a minute.
    ---
I know Headworks has firmly got his betting wallet slammed shut when it come to the NRL.
    ---
Personally, I gifted next weeks rent when, early in the Season, the Storm lost to the Tigers when Billy Slater played
his 300th game and my modest betting account have been treading water ever since.

Sport is not about betting, it's a sideshow to the spectacle of the game ... it's just so unpredictable this year.

Heck, maybe the Wallabies will win back the Bledisloe Cup this year ... I'd slip a photo in about now but sadly that
was so long ago, it's in Black and White ... and it's been 'All Black' ever since

The NRL has made a shock decision to include pre-war stars Dally Messenger, Dave Brown and Frank Burge alongside latter day giants Mal Meninga and Norm Provan as new Immortals.

After the league planned only to name two inductees a call was made to select three additional players and for the first time, they were chosen from the game's early years.

The quintet's inclusion boosts the membership of rugby league's most elite group to 13.

Meninga and Provan were voted in by judges Wally Lewis, Bob Fulton, Andrew Johns, Wayne Bennett, Phil Gould and Ray Warren before the additional three founding players were recognised.

"It was an opportunity the game could not afford to miss and the Immortals now reflect the full history of rugby league — from 1908 to the present," NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg said.

The five include the code's first star in Messenger, the winner of the most premierships with Provan, State of Origin's most successful coach in Meninga as well as the record-holders for the most tries in a match and season in Burge and Brown respectively.

Messenger is credited with generating the growth and popularity of the code after joining from the Australian rugby union team for the founding year of the competition in 1908.

He featured heavily in Eastern Suburbs' three-peat premiership years of 1911, 1912 and 1913 as a star centre and long-range goalkicker.

He is already recognised with the Dally M Award named in his honour.

Burge is arguably the game's greatest attacking forward, having scored 137 tries in 138 matches for Glebe between 1911 and 1926 and another nine in 16 appearances for St George in 1927.

He scored a record of eight tries in a premiership match for Glebe against University in 1920 while he played 29 matches for NSW and 13 Tests for Australia.

Brown was also one of the game's most celebrated try-scorers.

He crossed for a record 38 three-pointers from just 15 games for Easts in 1935 and scored 45 points in a match against Canterbury, which is also still a record.

Known as the Bradman of league, he finished with 93 tries in 94 games for the tri-colours to go with his two premierships and the honour of being Australia's youngest Test captain.

Provan is already recognised on the NRL's premiership trophy, standing alongside Arthur Summons in the game's most famous image.

However the second-rower was a star in his own right between 1951 and 1965, his 10 premierships at the Dragons made even more impressive by the fact he won the last five as captain-coach.

Meninga is the youngest of the inductees after finishing with three premierships and 74 tries in 166 games for Canberra to go with his 45 Tests and 42 State of Origins between 1982 and 1994.

His success has since transferred into the coaching box, where he led Queensland to eight-straight series wins and took the Kangaroos to a World Cup success last year

^ Surprised that Mal Meninga got the nod as it's an open secret that Wayne Bennett wanted the Australian Coaching gig and was well miffed when it went to Meninga.

Matt Cecchin says death threats after an NRL World Cup game are the end of the line for him

    Rugby League 2018-10070702-3x2-940x627-jpg
Matt Cecchin says the pressure has taken a toll on his home life.
To many he may be the best referee in the game, but Matt Cecchin has revealed he and his family faced death threats after a World Cup game and the NRL "noise" has now become too much.

His Sydney home, his son's home in Adelaide and his mother's in Perth were all placed on high alert after the semi-final between Tonga and England last year.
During the match he had disallowed a try to Tonga prop Andrew Fifita as he lost the ball before regathering and planting it over the try line.
After the game he got a call from New Zealand Police telling him to stay in his hotel.

"[They said] we are monitoring chat sites, there have been death threats, you need to contact your family," Cecchin said.
The 44-year-old said the death threats shook him up but he tried to move on.

"At the time I just brushed it off, it was a nothing thing, you know, I'm fine, I'm right.

"I probably didn't deal with it the way I should have, in retrospect.
"It surprised me … the magnitude and the disproportionate response I got from making a call at the end of the game that thankfully was right — I often sit back and wonder 'wow what if that was wrong?'"

Cecchin has now announced he will hang up his whistle at the end of the year because the intense public criticism was affecting his home life.

Bunnies put on a fantastic display tonight against the storm, even minus Greg Inglis.
19 year old Campbell Graham is a sure fire star of the future.

Anthony Griffin sacked as Penrith Panthers NRL coach four weeks out from finals

    Rugby League 2018-10079276-3x2-940x627-jpg
Panthers coach Anthony Griffin has been let go by the Panthers ahead of the finals.

Anthony Griffin has been sensationally sacked as Penrith Panthers coach just four weeks out from the NRL finals.

    Anthony Griffin at the Panthers
    • Fifth on the 2018 ladder with 13-7 win-loss record
    • 2016, 2017 semi-finals
    • 42 wins (58 per cent winning record), 30 losses

The Panthers' decision to part ways with Griffin, who took over as head coach in 2016 and has a winning percentage just under
60 per cent, comes as the club sits fifth on the ladder and only four points off top spot following consecutive wins.

Griffin, who was contracted through to the end of 2020, guided the Panthers to the semi-final stage in his first two seasons in
charge but despite their status as a premiership contender this year there had been much speculation his position was in doubt.

The Panthers have been plagued by rumours of discord between Griffin and general manager Phil Gould, with Griffin said to have
    lost the playing group.
Gould has been critical of the Panthers' performance in recent weeks but has repeatedly denied rumours Griffin was on the outer.

He also strenuously denied reports linking the club to Manly coach Trent Barrett and his assistant, John Cartwright.

Panthers assistant coach Cameron Ciraldo is the leading contender to take charge on a caretaker basis.

You really have to wonder what is not being reported..

To sack a coach 4 weeks out from the finals, from a team that will most likely play in the finals and has been performing well on the field...

You have to think something serious has happened for them not to wait until the end of the season.

^One story doing the rounds is Gould told Hook he had to leave at the end of the season, and Hook said fuck you I'm going now. Why not, it won't affect his (reportedly) 1.3 million dollar payout.

Who in their right mind would take the job with knowing everything they did with the team would have to be okayed by a self centered maniac like Gould?. I hope they go out in straight sets now this season and are genuine wooden spoon contenders next year - as they were before Hook signed up. The Panthers BOD might see that perhaps it's Gould who should be given the boot then.
