    Poll: a total disgrace!!!

Professional boxers eligible to fight in Rio Olympics this summer

The International Boxing Association (AIBA) voted on Wednesday to make a rule change allowing professionals to compete, with 84 of 88 member federations in favour.

A total of 26 places in the Rio tournament will be made available at a qualifying event in Venezuela next month.

I propose a new Olympic Motto:

    Faster, Higher, Stronger, Richer.

Why not? All but 2 olympic sports have professionals competing.

May as well go all the way and add boxing and wrestling to the list.

    Not that I condone mind.

Just out of interest do you have the same outrage at the professional soccer and rugby players competing in the olympics?

My opinion is no tennis, golf, or pro boxing,it's a joke, also if they hold the boxing qualifying in Venezuela there will no dunny paper for the cuts or for the dunny.

    Yes.

The Olympics was ruined in the 80s when the US basketball multi-billion dollar allstars were allowed to compete.

All professional athletes, every last one, should be banned from the Olympic games - it should not all be about tv ratings and advertising revenues; the world is lost, this is just one more example.

The Olympics is meant to showcase the best of the best - a bit difficult if you exclude the professionals.

I further wish that everyone would stop being so pc and pretending they enjoy the Paralympics.

    Sorry

I don't agree, and I reckon a very high % of athletes are on drugs; I reckon it's time to scrap the Olympic Games completely, it has become utterly worthless...

But they're pretty amazing showing what they can do when their backs are against the wall.

They're not sports these days. They're occupations. Sports are for fun.

It's a multi billion dollar industry, the proof was the London Olympics, the name Team GB was copyrighted.
So all merchandise and TV rights sold under the brand name Team GB

    Jim Thorpe:

James Francis "Jim" Thorpe (Sac and Fox (Sauk): Wa-Tho-Huk, translated as "Bright Path"; May 22, 1887 – March 28, 1953) was a Sac and Fox athlete of Native American and European ancestry. Considered one of the most versatile athletes of modern sports, he won Olympic gold medals in the 1912 pentathlon and decathlon, played American football (collegiate and professional), and also played professional baseball and basketball. He lost his Olympic titles after it was found he was paid for playing two seasons of semi-professional baseball before competing in the Olympics, thus violating the amateurism rules that were then in place. In 1983, 30 years after his death, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) restored his Olympic medals.

    Yeah, professionalise it all.

Sport isn't 'all about the taking part' as our parents bullshitted us.

    This is bullshit too

The goal of the Olympic Movement is to contribute to building a peaceful and better world by educating youth through sport practiced without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play.
Why should Steve Redgrave or Michael Phelps be perched on a higher pedestal, than for me; bigger legends of our lifetime like Cristiano Ronaldo and an up and coming Anthony Joshua?

Google the first 2 names and the first thing you will see is Olympic medals, even though they are or were champions and set bigger World Records at the top of their own unpopular professions.

The best part of the Olympics for me was always the track and field..... and if Bob Beamon, Michael Johnson, Carl Lewis, Daley Thompson, Seb Coe,Flo Jo, Fatimah Whitbread, Zola Budd and even Alan Wells werent professionals then who was?

    Probably that fukker Jesse Owens

If Usain Bolt is allowed in, it really should only be the cream of every crop joining.

If you wanna watch amateur sport, get yourself to Portman road

Olympic football is bollocks you've got the World cup etc

same goes for most sports ie; cycling-Tour de France, Boxing - WBF etc

Olympics should be track and field.
