In praise of young sports stars.

I have been following the upward curve of a young British tennis player for some time now. Headlines like this are coming more often now.

Heather Watson beats Sara Errani to reach second round at Italian Open

She really is a gutsy fighter with a great attitude.

Harry Mallinder could have chosen any sport to excel in but when your dad is the highly respected coach at Northampton RFC, his route to success was probably already written.
No danger of nepotism here though. Having watched him play for Northampton he is definitely there on merit. A gifted and skillful back with quick hands and an eye for the offload, his awareness is surprising in one so young.
Until you read his rugby background anyway:

I'm afraid she'll never be much better than a top 100 Pro (which is still admirable), and it isn't that much of a feat beating someone outside the top 20 when they're clearly injured.

Johanna Konta is a better player and she's 30 odd places above her and barely a year older.

But I'm glad Watson beat that Italian bloke, horrible watching it play with its continual "Ah Hee" grunt.
