Australian Adam Gotsis drafted in second round of NFL Draft by Denver Broncos


Adam Gotsis hasn't had to wait too long for his name to be called in the 2016 NFL Draft, heading to the defending Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos in the second round.

The former Georgia Tech player, who missed the back end of his final college season with injury, was tipped to be one of the highest ever Australians picked in the draft, and after going to Denver with the 63rd overall pick, he achieved that goal - formerly held by Colin Scotts, who was taken 70th overall in the 1987 NFL Draft. He becomes just the third ever Australian to be drafted after Scotts and Jesse Williams, who went to Seattle in 2013.

Standing at 193cm and weighing 130kg, the Melbourne native will loom at a replacement for Malik Jackson, a member of the Broncos' championship-winning defensive line, who left in the free agency period to sign a whopping $90m contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars

Gotsis was the head of what has been touted as the brightest ever crop of Australian talent to become eligible for the draft, and finds himself in an excellent situation with a team that is obviously ready to contend for Super Bowl championships in the immediate future.

Fellow Aussies Tom Hackett, Brad Craddock, Jamie Keehn, Blake Muir, Alexander Kinal and Lachlan Edwards are still waiting to see where they'll end up, with Craddock tweeting support for his fellow Australian after the Broncos announced their pick.

The NFL Draft goes for seven rounds stretched over three days - the first round picked on Friday, the second and third on Saturday and the rest on Sunday. This year's number one pick was California quarterback Jared Goff, who won't have to move very far, after being selected by the Los Angeles Rams.

I saw that some Scandinavian dude got drafted also, wide receiver I think, and apparently solely on the basis of tape on him playing in Europe and combine workouts.

^ Interesting. The key here is that Gotsis has four years of college ball behind him. He will be put into a big roll right away. A little different than Jarryd Hayne.

Yeah that's the thing with the guy I mentioned (trying but can't remember his name) he hasn't played a single down of college ball.

Sorry, don't mean to hijack the thread just thought it was interesting and this reminded me of it.

I think that Madden connection is quite funny also. Apparently that's what also partly inspired Hayne.

I knew feck all about Football until I started playing NCAA Football on the PlayStation.

^ I love Madden and NCAA football. I played the very first madden in '91. I also learned about Rugby from a video game.

Jeez I wish they'd make a rugby game with the Madden/NCAA production values but it's probably not going to happen for a long time. They're so hit 'n miss. Jonah Lomu Rugby from way back in '97 is probably still the best of the lot.

I can understand why tons more teams to play. My brother and I used to pick the two most backwater worst teams and play each other like Valdosta State or University of Alabama Birmingham.

Haha, that's what I did too. Took teams like Duke to the national championship.

Best thing was when you could import a player from NCAA to be drafted in Madden.

Could he be German Ant? This guy was and seems to be making a bit of a splash.

No wonder I couldn't find him I had the nationality wrong.

^ Ya that guy is a beast he will play on Sundays for sure.
