The inaugural WTCC Race of Thailand was officially launched at a packed press conference in the capital Bangkok today as preparations for the event continue to gather momentum. Sakol Wannapong, the Governor of the Sports Authority of Thailand, Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, Thailand’s Minister of Tourism and Sports, François Ribeiro, Head of Eurosport Events, the WTCC promoter, and Tanaisiri Chanvittayarom, Director of Chang International Circuit, were among the guests who addressed more than 75 local media.
François Ribeiro said: “We chose Thailand because we see the potential of this country in many aspects. We are confident that the first race in Thailand is a great beginning, and will engage Thai people in motorsports more.”
Home hero Tin Sritrai, who will be making his WTCC debut when he goes up against 18 championship regulars, was also present at the press conference.
Counting as the penultimate event of the 2015 FIA World Touring Car Championship season, WTCC Race of Thailand takes place at the Chang International Circuit in Buriram from 31 October-1 November. The Royal Automobile Association of Thailand (RAAT) has been appointed to run the event. Tickets are now on sale.
