Clint Dempsey gets two-year US cup ban for outburst

Clint Dempsey has been banned from the US Open Cup for two years after ripping up a referee's notebook during a game.

The Seattle Sounders forward, 33, flicked the notebook out of Daniel Radford's hand, picked it up off the pitch and then tore it into pieces after a team-mate had been sent off.

The ex-Fulham and Spurs man was duly sent off, as Seattle ended with seven men in a 3-1 loss to Portland Timbers.

The US captain is banned for six games or two years - whichever is longer.
Dempsey posted on Twitter after learning of his punishment

Dempsey, who had already been banned for three Major League Soccer games for the incident, has chosen not to contest the new punishment.

During the game, Brad Evans was sent off and was followed by Michael Azira - which resulted in Dempsey's extra-time outburst. Obafemi Martins also went off injured with all three substitutes used.

Dempsey, capped 112 times by the US, had to be restrained by team-mates and sarcastically applauded in the face of an assistant referee as he made his way off the pitch.

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!"

Be Interesting to know what generation the supposed American players are.

Don't they pay sportsmen/ women to take up citizenship to play for America.

More to the point, the Americans play a game where a tie /draw is an acceptable outcome.

Winning the Women's World Cup this year won't hurt either. The final against Japan was the most-watched soccer game in U.S. history.

USMNT rout Cuba, Gold Cup semifinals next

Clint Dempsey scored his first international hat trick for the U.S. men's national team against Cuba in the Gold Cup quarterfinals, lifting the Americans to a 6-0 win and a place in the semifinals in Atlanta.

In the fourth minute, Dempsey slipped behind the Cuban defense and latched onto a cross from Timmy Chandler on the right side, heading the ball over Cuban goalkeeper Diosvelis Guerra's outstretched arms to put the USA up 1-0 and send the Americans on their way to a rout.

After the U.S. had gone well ahead through goals from Gyasi Zardes, Omar Gonzalez and Aron Johannsson, Dempsey calmly knocked in a penalty in the 64th minute to make it 5-0, opting for a low chip down the center.

Dempsey finished off his hat trick off an unselfish Michael Bradley assist in the 78th minute to cap the scoring and put the U.S. up 6-0.

These were Dempsey's 45th, 46th and 47th career international goals, and he leads the tournament with six scores. Of those six, three have come on headers. He now sits 10 goals behind Landon Donovan's U.S. goal record of 57.
