From the Alinghi website http://http://www.alinghi.com/en/alinghi/team/sailing_team.php :
The team is based in Switzerland and is proud to say that it is made up of 21 different nationalities.
Many kiwis I agree, but it's a team work, don't forget that everyone's know-how is important in a team.

New Zealand is a seaman's nation, Switzerland is more a mountain climbers nation, we have many lakes but no sea. So we have to find teammates from foreign countries. Nationalism is crap, in sport and in every other field. So let's support both teams who offer us fascinating races, and pointing that we have kiwis on board is senseless.

Let's see what happen at 14h30 (swiss time) and enjoy the race.

    Good luck to the kiwis.

    Good idea though.

We could get a load of Brazilians and Argies to play in the 'English' football team.

Good idea, they are sooo weak it could only help.

On the other hand, Alinghi doesn't represent Switzerland as a national team, it's just a swiss based team. Just for your information.
Same as Federer doesn't represent Switzerland, apart when he plays in the Davis Cup.

What a misfortune for the kiwis, it could have be more gratifiying for Alinghi to win "à la régulière". Next rendez-vous tomorrow.

I give you the of bad faith LC. You maybe forget that there is a boat under the kiwi's feets. And this boat is not a product of the kiwi industry, it is mostly the result of swiss research and know-how.

About the crew, the team is composed of 37 sailors, the best 17 are navigating (6 kiwis, 3 yanks, 2 australians, 2 italians, 1 swiss, 1 spanish, 1 canadian and 1 dutch). It's an international enterprise composed of 130 people. The project is open to the world, don't forget Switzerland is a very very small country. 7,4 millions (20% of them are foreigners)

At least Alinghi is maybe more open to include foreigners in his team (I admit they have no choice) than some small minded kiwis. By reading the kiwis comments on this thread you're looking everything coming from Europe as crap. It's maybe time you travel a little bit further than Asia.

So, keep the bulge in your pant by thinking you are sooo much superior than europeans and be happy.

And good luck to the kiwis.

Well I just may have travelled a little further than Asia Wallalai.Last time I checked,NZ was a very, very, very small country with about 4 million people...yep,much smaller than Switzerland.

I actually never knew that the boat mostly the result of swiss research and know-how....not being a sailing nation and all.who makes the sails, mast etc as I'm sure a land locked country has plenty of businessse that excel in this area......Infact,I would say that what you have said is complete crap.

The fact of the matter is that without buying/stealing the talent (russel Coutts,Butterworth and many of Team NZ afterguard for a start) you would have NO team....or a shitty one at best.Guess which team would jump up and down the most if the rules said that the sailors actually had to reside in the country that they sail for???

The only reason I want NZ to win, is what it will do for our country.

AC is about who has the biggest cheque book..pure and simple.90% of the talent that the Swiss have is imported. It's a business, not a sport.

In fact the AC has had a nationality ruling for years, the Alinghi team changed that ruling, Thats their right to do that as cup holder.
I guess the fact that blatant cheque book entry has pissed a lot of Kiwis off because being a small, and by comparison with the Swiss, impoverished country, we will never really be able to compete, you develop good sportsman and they are poached by someone willing to pay more.

By the way LC its not about business, no real payback for Alinghi or its backer, its about Ego for him. He is a very rich lad who inherited his wealth and I guess he wants to make his own mark. But moan as much as we like, money rules in most sports. So I guess in Sailing, which we used to dominate, like Motor racing before it, once the big bucks hit, Kiwis will be relegated to a support role as they are now in international Motor racing.

I never thought of Kiwi as a poor country, but don't forget your major sponsor is Emirates from Dubai. They're about as Kiwi as a dromedary.

Its not a poor country as such, 23rd on the IMF 2005 list (Swiss are 6th)
    //http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_%28PPP%29_per_capita
But it hasn't the big money sponsorship / underwiting that the big economies are able to generate.

Have to add, all our boats and sails are made in nz, in fact nz has one of the most sort after yacht builders in the world.
This includes ocean going luxury yachts.
and our boasting is because we do have some of the best sailors in the world (not just europe) this has been proved time and time again.
Like i said before the swiss didn't hire a kiwi for his good looks.

Maybe not a good advertisment after last night.
The neibours must have thought the Farang had gone crazy last night, after the spin blew I went outside for a smoke, walking around the front garden saying,
