    Boycott World Cup 2018

At last someone in a position of influence has said it. The whole sorry, rotten to the core charade that is FIFA can only be reformed one way...

Former FA chairman David Bernstein calls for 2018 World Cup boycott | Football | theguardian.com

Former FA chairman David Bernstein calls for 2018 World Cup boycott
    • Bernstein urges European nations to act against Fifa
    • Ex-FA chairman: ‘Qatar was Alice in Wonderland decision’
    • Germany warns Uefa may quit Fifa if report not published
    • FA’s predictable response to Fifa ethics report not good enough

The former Football Association chairman David Bernstein has urged European nations to boycott the 2018 World Cup unless world governing body Fifa undergoes serious reform.

“England on its own cannot influence this – one country can’t do it,” he told BBC Sport. “If we tried to do something like that we’d be laughed at. I think England within Uefa undoubtedly have the power to influence Fifa, but to do so they would have to consider withdrawing from the World Cup, the next World Cup, unless proper reform – including [the Fifa president Sepp] Blatter not standing [for a fifth term] – is carried out at Fifa.

“If I was at the FA now, I would do everything I could to encourage other nations within Uefa – and there are some who would definitely be on side, others maybe not – to take this line. At some stage you have to walk the talk, stop talking and do something.”

Fifa is firmly under the spotlight again following the release of a report on Thursday by the chairman of the adjudicatory chamber of Fifa’s ethics committee which cleared Russia and Qatar to host the 2018 and 2022 tournaments, having found no serious breaches of bidding rules by either nation.

Michael Garcia, who conducted the investigation on which Thursday’s report was based but whose full report has not been made public, has appealed against the version released by Fifa.

Allegations of corruption – strenuously denied – continue to be levelled against the Qatar 2022 and Russia 2018 bid teams.

According to Bernstein, who retired from his post with the FA last year, boycotting football’s biggest tournament should be a real possibility but only if other countries support England in doing so.

“It sounds drastic but frankly this has gone on for years now, it’s not improving, it’s going from bad to worse to worse,” he added. “There are 54 countries within Uefa. There’s Germany, Spain, Italy, France and Holland – all powerful. You can’t hold a serious World Cup without them. They have the power to influence if they have the will.”

Bernstein, who gave way to Greg Dyke as the head of the FA, says the events surrounding the report into 2018 and 2022 bidding went “beyond ridicule” and said he had stepped down from his role on Fifa’s anti-discrimination task force as a consequence.

He added: “Fifa is sort of a totalitarian set-up. Bits of it remind me of the old Soviet empire. People don’t speak out and if they do they get quashed. The choosing of Qatar was clearly one of the most ludicrous decisions in the history of sport. You might as well have chosen Iceland in the winter. It was like an Alice in Wonderland sort of decision.

“I’ve resigned for two reasons – firstly, the body has been pretty ineffectual. I’ve been on it for more than a year and we only had one meeting; secondly because frankly I don’t wish to be personally associated with Fifa any further.”

Yes, Boycott Russia, that probably has a fair claim to host a World Cup, when it's Qatar that fucking bought one off.

    What a chump.

Not a bad idea.....just on principle.

    Yet, won't be supported universally.

    Ano Bahrainer Dohaha

Ive lived in both and not sure about the players its almost to hot to drink at noon in the summer often over 50 degrees

The Al Tanis have however enough loot to build Aircon Astrodomes and think they'll do this sooner than loose face.

As for Blaoter hes a ldevious Gnome in fact may even be wozzycat

That's not going to happen, they promised they would do it as part of their bid but later admitted it is simply not feasible.

They're going to ask to move it to September and piss off all the European leagues.

*That's* when a boycott will happen if it's going to at all. I'm not sure even Platini will be able to talk the big clubs down - the Champions League and their own leagues are where they get their money.

The boycott is to force change in FIFA, not punish Russia.
If you boycott something, it has to be something of value to be a threat.
The bug Euro countries can go without a World Cup, but can the World Cup go without them?
If half a dozen of the Euro giants threatened t hold their own tournament at the same time South America would probably join them and FIFA would be left trying to sell Algeria v Jamaica as a WC opener.

Wait, there's big money involved in international football now??

When did this happen? Whoever blew the lid off this incredible scandal is surely on the fast track to Pulitzer glory.

Blatter has presided over such a culture of corruption for so long, no one has ever challenged him, or stood against him.
He has been lining his own pockets for so long he believes he can carry on thieving and dishing out brown envelopes every time there is a hint of a scandal.
That is why he decided to stay on again after declaring he would retire after this term.
No one has ever successfully opposed him. Plattini was supposed to stand and then withdrew. Either he was bought off or he didn't fancy dealing with the inevitable clusterfuck when Blatter does leave.
There are two major problems with this. First there needs to be a group of credible nations where the CEO is beyond Blatters reach. FA has to understand the implications of financial loss from the boycott. The national team would not suffer but all Dyke's plans for grass roots would be 4 years further away from fruition.
The best thing would be for Blatter to have a very serious accident, then send the police in with a search warrant.

Would be great news if that scumbag Blatter got the arse and charged with corruption
but not likely to happen,Fifa is a closed shop with him and all his mates running a fiefdom and they think they do not have to answer to anyone.
Hope the euros say we are not going to Qatar so the arabs get the message as well as
Blattar and his mates that corruption has to be stamped out.

But there wasn't any corruption involved during the world cup bidding process.

A full investigation was done by FIFA and.................oh, wait a minute.

The second a 400 page investigation was reduced to the 40 pages FIFA were prepared to publish, the wheels for boycott should have been put in motion.

FIFA will never ever reform from the inside. Most sponsors are pussies and as a couple pull out somebody else takes their place. The only way it will ever happen is if a handful of countries get the ball rolling. Enough is enough.

    Oh FFS.

It's 31C at night in Qatar in July and August, and that's before you factor in the humidity.

They cannot physically play there in the summer.

And that's why they will try and move it, and then the fun starts.

They are supposed to have fully air con stadiums. That was part of their bidding spiel.

The World cup was staged in the USA and the temperature for some games was 44C , 31 C wont be an issue , The humidity within stadiums can be controlled .

Heat rises as Qatar dismisses plans for air-conditioned stadia at 2022 football World Cup

It may be over ten years away – but football fans heading to the Middle East to watch the World Cup in 2022 will be in for an exceedingly hot time.
The planet’s biggest sporting event is due to be held in Qatar during the June and July of that year – a portion of the calendar when temperatures in the desert state can reach a thermometer-troubling 50°C (122 degrees Farenheit).

This will come as no surprise to anyone with a basic knowledge of the heat that assails the Gulf region at the height of summer – but will come as a concern to the tournament’s organisers, who were told that Qatar’s climate would not be an issue.
Qatar’s winning bid to stage the World Cup was partly based on the assurance that it would build high-tech air-conditioned stadia to keep temperatures at manageable levels.

Most of the British public if they had the chance... Brazil wasnt exactly mild this year and If you watched this years world cup you would have seen the introduction of water breaks.

TBH I wouldnt be surprised to see the game cut to 4 quarters like the Super Bowl and a shit load of advertising revenue in Blatters arse pocket

Oh stop talking bollocks Fluke, I was in Korea and the games were in the evening when it was comfortable and not at all humid. Same with the rest, apart from Brazil, which is why they introduced these drinks breaks. And that is still nothing compared to the sandpit.

The only sport I would do in the Middle East summer is water skiing and that's only off a boat with a big fuck off esky on it.

Now I'll type it slowly so you might have a glimmer of a chance of understanding.
