Ched Evans: Footballer released from prison after rape sentence


Former Sheffield United striker Ched Evans has been released from prison after serving half of his five-year sentence for rape.
The 25-year-old was found guilty in April 2012 of raping a 19-year-old woman in a hotel in May 2011.
Evans maintains his innocence and will make a "very personal and profound" statement on his website next week.
Almost 150,000 people have signed a petition urging Sheffield United not to take the Wales international back.
But Blades manager Nigel Clough said he had held talks with club officials about the possibility of Evans returning.
Evans left Wymott Prison, near Leyland in Lancashire, in a car at about 05:30 BST on Friday.
United signed the player for £3m in 2009, but released him the month after he was convicted of raping a woman at a hotel near Rhyl, Denbighshire.
Evans denied the offence, but was found guilty by a jury at Caernarfon Crown Court.

A statement on his website on Friday said he would continue to "fight to clear his name".
It added: "Next week Ched will make a very personal and profound statement by video. Ched is now adjusting to normal life after serving a sentence for a crime consistently denied."
Professional Footballers' Association chief executive Gordon Taylor said last week that Evans should be allowed to continue his career after his release.
And Clough told BBC Radio Sheffield on Wednesday: "We've had one or two discussions and the owners will make a decision on it.
"It is above a football level. If he comes back then we [the coaching staff] will decide whether to play him or not."
Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg urged the club's owners to "think really long and hard" before re-signing Evans.
Clegg, MP for Sheffield Hallam, said: "When you take a footballer on, you are not taking just a footballer these days, you are also taking on a role model."
Richard Caborn, former sports minister and ex-MP for Sheffield Central, said Evans must "show remorse and say sorry" before he can be considered for a return to playing professionally.

Former Manchester City forward Evans, capped 13 times by Wales, scored 48 goals in 113 games for the Blades before his imprisonment.
Jill Saward, who was raped in the notorious Ealing Vicarage case in 1986, believes allowing Evans to play professional football again would send out "a totally wrong message".
"We don't want young people being influenced by icons or celebrities who have a past like this," Saward, a high-profile victim of crime campaigner, told BBC Breakfast.
"I'm not saying he can't do anything in football but I don't think he should be playing."
Christopher Stacey, director of reformed offenders' charity Unlock, argued on Breakfast that Evans deserves a second chance.
"There is a difference between condoning his behaviour and giving him a job," said Stacey.
"People like Ched Evans have to go somewhere. They are back in the world and we have to find a way of reintegrating them.
"Ultimately people have to be the best at the job they are going for and that's a decision Sheffield United have to make as an employer."



I have to declare an interest her as I am a lifelong United supporter. At first I was ambivalent about this and then I thought if he doesn't sign for us, someone else in the division will sign him and he comes back to haunt us.

In the end my conscience got the better of me and I do not want the club to sign him. We are a family club and his signing would divide the support and the dressing room probably. He would bring a load of baggage and public interest from the media and rival supporters, of the kind our club just does not need.

The final nail is the event itself. Sloppy seconds with a woman so drunk she has no recall of the event. Not the role model I want for my football mad kids who are also United supporters.

I'm inclined to agree while the man has served the legal term footballers like pop stars are role models to the young.
While his career may be over in UK with sufficient talent perhaps he can get a game in a country where moral standards are sub par or hub par.

As for any life long fan of Sheffield Utd my deepest condolences and a ditty to cheer you up.

He has always stated that he was innocent of the charge.
But he has done his time guess its time to go back to work.

They accused the media of editing interviews to “satisfy an agenda”.
Evans’ family have consistently argued that he was wrongly convicted of rape.
Evans, 25, was sentenced to five years in prison in 2012, after raping an inebriated 19-year-old woman in a hotel room in north Wales. His friend and fellow footballer, Clayton McDonald, was cleared of the same charge.
The woman said throughout the trial that she had no memory of the incident. Evans maintains his innocence, claiming that the sex was consensual.

Plenty of 'rapists' have been reinstated. I believe a Plymouth goalkeeper who had his wicked way is now club captain.

Purely depends on the case.

You obviously wouldn't hire the likes of Ted Bundy to solve your left flank issue - mainly because he's dead, but also because, well, you know...

He seems to view an away day with the lads as an entitlement to dismiss relationship conventions.
Go out with the lads get drunk and follow your best mate up a bird in a coma. No guilt or contrition on his part.
He might, just possibly be technically not guilty of rape, but I do not want my children idolising a footballer with his character, or his attitude of entitlement to abusing women.
As I said previously I don't mind where he plies his trade as long as it's not at 'my' club.

Sadly Chas the premier league is full of guys just like this man and a lot even worse. They have come to believe they are worth the ridiculous salaries they are handed and have developed an attitude to go with it.
The trouble is with cases like this is you are not allowed to tell women that getting off your face and sloping off to a hotel with a man might just make you part responsible. The law is also favoured towards the woman thanks to that man hating Labour minister Harriet Harmen
Guilty or not I would imagine his career is as good as over which is OK if guilty and a shame if the guyis innocent
