The 2014 Ryder Cup - Gleneagles, 26-28 Sept

Arguably the finest sporting competition in the world. Here are the automatic qualifiers on both teams

American Capt. Tom Watson and his counterpart Paul McGinley

European captain Paul McGinley will name three wildcards on Tuesday at 12:30 BST, with American counterpart Tom Watson doing the same at around midnight BST.

I'm hoping that Poulter is a captains pick. He was absolutely outstanding in Medinah, US last time around. A great Matchplay guy.

Stephen Gallacher should be in on merit and one other, perhaps Westwood or Donald?

    The automatic qualifiers

    Rank US - Europe

    1
Bubba Watson - Rory McIlroy (NI)
    2
Rickie Fowler - Henrik Stenson (Swe)
    3
Jim Furyk - Victor Dubuisson (Fra)
    4
Jimmy Walker - Jamie Donaldson (Wal)
    5
Phil Mickelson - Sergio Garcia (Spa)

6 Matt Kuchar - Thomas Bjorn (Den)

7 Jordan Speith - Justine Rose (Eng)

8 Patrick Reed - Martin Kaymer (Ger)

9 Zach Johnson - Graeme McDowell (NI)

Absolutely...that guy is just unbelievable in the Ryder Cup...they have to pick him...I reckon the Merkins will struggle at Gleneagles...what a bloody cold windswept piece of heather strewn scrub...the Europeans will have a real advantage there.

Poulter's almost always a wild card pick. I wouldn't be surprised to see Gallacher in there either, he came so close at the weekend - missed it by a place.

We shouldn't get ahead of ourselves...there are still two high quality rounds of the Fed Ex Cup to go yet...that is serious loot...and the Ryder Cup starts the week after without a break...I think the top merkins will be off the pace before they start...their whole team is in the hunt for that trophy...on the other hand Poulter for one is already out of the FedEx...and Luke Donald...they will be nicely rested.

    Poulter, Westwood and Gallacher.

No room for Luke Donald, whose tinkering with his swing has caused a drop in form.

Team US has not won in Scotland for 41 years, and not won in Europe for 21 years. Hardly any point them turning up.

Yes, and loads of those chimps that shout "USA! USA!" just because one of their players hits a straight drive.

Hopefully they'll go all quiet and despondent by the end of the first day. No understanding of golf etiquette at all, the heathens.

You forget the endless "In Da Hole" on every drive, even on long par 5's, and the alternative "You da man" every time any american play does anything, including having a sneaky pee against a tree.

Oh yes, I forgot about "in da hole".

As if shouting that in some way influences it.

I don't think too many of those morons get across the Atlantic, and the Scots are great golfing spectators...if I could I would love to be there...warm clothing and all

There were loads at the K-Club but it didn't take long to shut them up, 10-6 on the first day.

Started really worrying when Tiger lobbed his 9 iron into the lake I think.

    European team:
    McIlroy
    Stenson
    Dubuisson
    Donaldson
    Garcia
    Bjorn
    Rose
    Kaymer
    McDowell
    Gallacher
    Poulter
    Westwood

Controversial decision to drop Donald for Westwood.

I have checked McIlroy, Stenson, Rose, Keymer, Garcia will almost certainly be playing in the FedEx Cup final. I think more of the US team will be. Bad timing that. Mickelson is a noteable and very loud exception. He has complained bitterly about the timing, but his performance in Ryder Cups is such I doubt he will be the game breaker.

It's not controversial. Luke Donald is like Tiger, he's changed things and he's got it wrong.

You need the best form players plus the hardnuts like Poulter and Furyk who always score in Ryder Cups even if they don't look good at the outset.

Yet he was higher in the rankings than Westwood. McGinley knows them both well and obviously made an honest call...I tend to agree Westwood is more likely to deliver in matchplay.

The rankings don't necessarily reflect current form, especially if there has been a recent drop. And don't forget the contribution to the team is also important.

But as usual the captain will end up being a hero or a villain for making a difficult decision.

Stick to the subject of the current Ryder Cup instead of airing your petty prejudices against Americans. No wonder you brits all huddle together in your stupid clubs, nobody else can stand you.
