i shall. Here's my reckoning behind it, It was Man U's home record last year that let them down. If the league was judged only on away results, they would have come third. All we need now is a vuvuezela shop at Old Trafford

Add to that a decent Manager, a few additions(Fabregas was absent from Barca's new kit launch, Tony Kroos ??) and a handful of defenders

Plus the huge advantage of no European football

Get on it Cyrille, you know it makes sense

And this makes them a good bet because...?

Because they won't be playing at home next season?

There is no chance Liverpool would have finished third if they hadn't had that luxury.

It is quite a significant boost to the Moaners, especially if Van Gaal brings in some decent new players.

Mauricio Pochettino: Tottenham appoint Southampton boss

Tottenham Hotspur have appointed Mauricio Pochettino as their new manager on a five-year deal.

The Argentine resigned from Southampton after 18 months with the club.

The 42-year-old becomes Tottenham's 10th manager since 2001 and replaces Tim Sherwood who was sacked on 13 May.

"This is a club with tremendous history and prestige and I am honoured to have been given this opportunity to be its head coach," Pochettino told the Spurs website.

    Pochettino fact file

    • Born 2 March 1972 in Santa Fe
    • Played for Newell's Old Boys, Espanyol, PSG and Bordeaux
    • While with Espanyol he won the Copa del Rey twice: 1999-2000, 2005-06
    • Capped 20 times Argentina, scoring two goals.
    • Took charge at Espanyol in January 2009.
    • Named Southampton boss on 18 January 2013
    • Secured notable wins over Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea
Pochettino's assistant Jesus Perez, first team coach Miguel D'Agostino and goalkeeping coach Toni Jimenez have also left Southampton to join him at Spurs.

"There is an abundance of top-class talent at the club and I am looking forward to starting work with the squad," he added.

"Tottenham Hotspur has a huge following across the world and I have great admiration for the passion the fans show for this team.

"We are determined to give the supporters the kind of attacking football and success that we are all looking to achieve."

The former Espanyol boss took over at Southampton in January 2013, when he replaced Nigel Adkins, and led them to eighth place in the Premier League.

His future at St Mary's had been in question, following the departure of chairman Nicola Cortese in January.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy said: "He has a proven ability to develop each player as an individual, whilst building great team spirit and a winning mentality."

Southampton chairman Ralph Krueger said: "We will be looking for a manager that shares our values, our principles and our philosophy; a manager who can continue to grow the first team."

It means absolutely nothing if he doesn't.

The person in the spotlight here is Woodward, who so far has only shown any acumen for bringing in sponsorship money.

There is a vacuum at Man U that will only be partially filled by Van Gaal imo.

The absence of European football means the club runs the risk of only being able to get mercenaries, not winners.

The inevitable demotion of Rooney behind RvP is also liable to cause considerable friction.

I certainly see them finishing below spurs.

Liverpool are close to agreeing a deal for Southampton and England striker Rickie Lambert for a fee of around £4m plus add-ons.

The Reds are hopeful Lambert will be able to complete a medical on Saturday before flying out to Miami with the England squad on Sunday.

The Liverpool-born forward is intent on leaving St Mary's this summer.

Southampton rejected a similar bid from West Ham in January but are set to cash in on the 32-year-old.

    Rickie Lambert factfile

    • Blackpool 3 games 0 goals (1998-2000)
    • Macclesfield 49 games 10 goals (2001-2002)
    • Stockport 110 games 19 goals (2002-2005)
    • Rochdale 68 games 28 goals (2005-2006)
    • Bristol Rovers 155 games 59 goals (2006-2009)
    • Southampton 235 games 117 goals (2009-present)

Southampton have turned down Liverpool's initial offer for Lambert, but talks are continuing and if Saints receive a bid they deem acceptable they will not stand in his way.

There has been interest in Lambert from other Premier League clubs, but it is understood he is currently only considering Liverpool.

Lambert spent five years as a youth player at Anfield before being released as a 15-year-old and he still supports the Reds.

He scored 14 goals in 39 games this season and has 117 in 235 appearances since joining Southampton from Bristol Rovers in 2009.

Liverpool remain in talks with Southampton over deals for both England midfielder Adam Lallana, 26, and Croatia defender Dejan Lovren, 24.

The Anfield club have also made an enquiry for Sevilla full back Alberto Moreno, 21, and told the Spanish side they are willing to pay as much as £16m for the player.

Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino has left to take over at Tottenham, and the Saints have already turned down offers this summer for Lallana and left-back Luke Shaw, from Liverpool and Manchester United respectively.

The south coast club, who finished eighth in the Premier League, are under no financial pressure to sell and are determined not to be pressurised into sanctioning deals by suitors keen to make signings before the World Cup

Arsene Wenger has signed a three-year deal to remain Arsenal manager.

Wenger has led Arsenal to eight major trophies since arriving in September 1996 and will now stay until 2017.

The 64-year-old has just guided the Gunners to a 17th consecutive Champions League qualification and ended a nine-year wait for silverware with victory over Hull in the FA Cup final.

"We are entering an exciting period. We have a strong squad, financial stability and huge support," he said.

"The club has always shown faith in me and I'm very grateful for that.

"We have gone through fantastic periods and also periods where we have had to stick together. Every time when that togetherness was tested I got the right response.

"I think I have shown some loyalty as well towards this club and hopefully we can make some more history. I am sure we can."

The Frenchman's previous contract was set to expire this summer.

Arsenal had not lifted a major domestic trophy since 2005 prior to the recent FA Cup triumph, although they did reach the Champions League final in 2006

Classic asset stripping. Sure not easy being a Saints fan.

The way things are going I'll have to dig me boots out of the shed.

I'm the wrong side of 50 and not at all fit, but I reckon I could get a game.

Ah well it was good while it lasted.

Frank Lampard: Chelsea midfielder to leave Stamford Bridge

Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard has announced that he is to leave the club after 13 years at Stamford Bridge.

The 35-year-old England international, Chelsea's all-time leading scorer with 211 goals, was out of contract.

Since joining from West Ham, Lampard had helped the club to three Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2012.

Lampard has yet to decide if he will retire, but has had offers from 16 other clubs.

The midfielder, who is currently with the England squad in Miami ahead of the World Cup, will not consider any of the offers until after the tournament finishes.

After joining from West Ham for £11m in June 2001, Lampard made 649 appearances for Chelsea, who also won four FA Cups, two League Cups and the Europa League in his time at the west London club.

^ I don't think he'll be playing football next season.

    He'll be playing soccer instead.

Heading for the Major League I reckon.

Cesc Fabregas has completed his transfer to Chelsea from Barcelona, the Spain midfielder has announced in a statement.

#The 27-year-old is currently in Brazil with the national squad but has put pen to paper on a deal that sees him return to England after leaving Arsenal for the Nou Camp in 2011.

He is believed to have signed a five-year contract for a fee in the region of £30million.

With Barcelona having failed to win any silverware last season and the appointment of Luis Enrique as the new head coach, Fabregas was allowed to leave Spain and he revealed that Chelsea was his preferred option from those who had made their interest known.

"I considered all the other offers very carefully and I firmly believe that Chelsea is the best choice," he said.

"They match my footballing ambitions with their hunger and desire to win trophies. They have an amazing squad of players and an incredible manager. I am fully committed to this team and I can't wait to start playing."
