MLB Someone didn't get the memo.....

    What a sad sack........

LA Dodgers pitcher says there's 'absolutely zero excitement' for Australia trip

Travelling to Sydney to open the Major League Baseball season is proving too much for the Los Angeles Dodgers, with star pitcher Zack Greinke claiming there is "absolutely zero excitement" for coming to Australia.

The Dodgers are also reportedly considering leaving their No.1 pitching ace Clayton Kershaw back in the United States, with their March 22-23 opening series against the Arizona Diamondbacks in Sydney looking more like a chore for the powerhouse side than a historic chance to spread the baseball gospel.

Greinke is LA's No.2 pitcher behind $US215 million ($A239.06 million) man Kershaw, and would likely start in one of the two matches to be played at the SCG next month.

But the 30-year-old says he'd rather not come.

"I would say there is absolutely zero excitement for it," Greinke told ESPN.

"There just isn't any excitement to it. I can't think of one reason to be excited for it."

The MLB's landmark move to open the season proper in Australia for the first time means the Dodgers and Diamondbacks are starting their season more than a week before the rest of the league.

Arizona pitchers Brandon McCarthy and Patrick Corbin have spoken of their desire to be a part of history in Sydney, but it seems big brothers the Dodgers may feel the venture is beneath them.

To not bring drawcard Kershaw down under would be a major blow for the concept, given the MLB would be eager to showcase its biggest stars to a new market.

However, the Dodgers are reportedly trying to manage Kershaw's workload and want him on deck to throw in their US opener on March 30 and their home opener in LA on April 4.

Manager Don Mattingly has said they don't want Kershaw to overexert himself too early in the season after pitching a career-high amount of innings last year.

Despite his lack of enthusiasm, Greinke says he would pitch in Australia if required.

They are ambassadors. Take the best game there and see what happens. They can't expect to get Aussies enthusiastic if they are all worried and field second rate teams.

It would be say Australia send a cricket team to US with someone of Shane Warne's calibre.

Both games are (I think) sold out, for a long time already.
The Diamondbacks did a great PR job during the cricket season.

That guy can probably expect some Stuart Broad style slagging in the media when they land.

    way to promote the game.......

Greinke is out of line for making such comments and I am sure the commissioner will make it known that he needs to shut his mouth. I will say that I doubt the rest of his team fells the same way. There are some Aussies players in the MLB including a very good closer Grant Balfour. The sport is on the rise in the land of OZ and I hope this doesn't turn some people away.

This does make sense from a strategic standpoint as the need to win both those games.

It's a gay sport. We call it "Rounders" and you stop playing it when you go to big school.

Or the reverse, galvanize the public and other players with a bit of timed banter first....

Not as gay as soccer. A sport no self respecting American man would be caught dead playing. Only for girls and pooves.

So you have 2.5 million + American men that don't respect themselves (and that's just the registered players).

Added: Actually that figure is way too low, it's from 2006.

    Probably double that by now.

THE Los Angeles Dodgers have gone into damage control after star pitcher Zack Greinke controversially declared there was “zero excitement” about the franchise’s upcoming Major League Baseball opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks in Sydney.

Greinke, the Dodgers’ No. 2 starter, told ESPN on the weekend: “I would say there is absolutely zero excitement for [the trip]. There just isn’t any excitement to it.

“I can’t think of one reason to be excited for it.”

Shit Bloke? Or just a Wanker?

Dodgers president Stan Kasten has tried to distance his organisation from the blast but neither LA nor the MLB are willing to condemn Greinke for having an opinion - and he won’t be slapped on the wrist for jeopardising the game’s attempts to spread baseball to a new market.

However, the club and organisers are adamant the right-armer is in the minority in regards to having cold feet about the trip.

Dodgers president Stan Kasten responded to Greinke’s claims by insisting the club as a whole was looking forward to the “once in a lifetime opportunity”.

“Zack has this endearing, contrarian quality to him that we all know and love about him,” Kasten said.

“He’s famously focused and meticulous about his training regimen. It’s what makes him so good and such a great teammate. This is clearly going to alter his routine. I understand that aspect of it.

“But my problem right now is trying to make room for all the people that want to go - players, family, front office people. As an organisation, we couldn’t be more excited about this once in a lifetime opportunity.”

Given the amount of money being poured into opening the season at the SCG, organisers in Australia were far from thrilled with Greinke’s comments and fired off a “please explain” to the MLB and the players’ association.

However, on Monday morning they were assured by officials in America that there is still enthusiasm among the players to spread the gospel of baseball in Sydney and that Greinke didn’t reflect the overall sentiment of the Dodgers organisation.

MLB’s landmark move to open the season proper in Australia for the first time means the Dodgers and Diamondbacks are starting their season on March 22 and 23 - more than a week before the rest of the league.

Arizona pitchers Brandon McCarthy and Patrick Corbin have spoken of their desire to be a part of history in Sydney, but it seems big brothers the Dodgers may feel the venture is beneath them.

The Dodgers have not announced their starting pitchers for the two games, but are reportedly considering leaving ace Clayton Kershaw back in the United States.

To not bring drawcard Kershaw Down Under would be a major blow for the concept, given the MLB would be eager to showcase its biggest stars to a new market.

The Dodgers are trying to manage Kershaw’s workload and reportedly want him on deck to throw in their US opener on March 30 and their home opener in LA on April 4.

Greinke has said he is still willing to pitch in Australia if needed.

“It’s a baseball thing. It’s an ownership thing, spreading stuff around,” Greinke said. “That’s what it’s for and it’s for the greater good of baseball.”

He is still expected to make the trip and start on the mound for the Dodgers in one of the two matches.

Why should he be considered a shit bloke?

I'm sure he'd love a trip to Australia for a holiday but to have to play your opening games after travelling all that distance would suck.

And by not taking one particular pitcher from the starting rotation hardly constitutes playing second rate teams.....

Pitchers are everything in Baseball. Bets get refunded if the announced Pitcher doesn;t start.

As to the travel, I'm pretty sure they are not stepping the plane and going straight to the pitch. Plenty of other world athletes manage travel without issues.

You would think though, that even if you personally weren't keen on the idea of an exhibition style opening, that when the league and the team that pays you $19,000,000 dollars a year tries a little initiative to grow the sport you would say when asked by a reporter, "Yeah, it's great" or something...... rather than shit on the whole thing.

Can you imagine McCaw or Horwill saying to the UK press that the Euro tour is crap and a waste of time as we flog most of teams and the weather is shite?

I hope he gets the Shit Bloke treatment that Broad got.

    I agree, we do.

It's a byproduct of not having having had the shit kicked out of your national soul for the last 2 millennium.
