What country will win most medals in Sochi?

I hope Germany of course, having dominated most of the winter olympics for the last 30 years. Ever since Sarajevo 1984.

It was sweet to beat he Russians, and the doped US athletes weren't even in the same league. Can you believe this pic is the only one I found that I could copy and paste? Almost deleted from history. Anyway, I think this time Germany will come in 2nd or 3rd, to many weaknesses in sports with many competitions, Biathlon, Cross Country, and speed skating. Reemerging in ski jumping and Alpine, and getting better in the new sports snowboarding and freestyle, but they're highly unpredictable. Guaranteed medals almost only in the sport we own, luge, and in Nordic Kombination we could share them with Norway down the middle if it goes like in the events of the last months.

America is weak in Cross Country, Biathlon, ski jumping and luge; Canada as well apart from Cross Country, but no good in Bobsleigh. It won in Vancouver with 26 medals, experience shows that they'll lose about 40% at the next games. If Russia wins 40% more than in Vancouver were it had 15, that would be 22. Not enough.

My bet is on small Norway. Dominating Cross Country (12 sets of medals), Biathlon (11), very strong in Alpine (10), snowboard (10), and freestyle (10). Their only weakness is the ice track. I think they'll break the previous records of Canada (14 gold), and the US (37 medals), both in the Vancouver games by a long way.

    1984 - as in OP.

    1980 - Soviet Union.

I don't trust posters wild statements, so thought I'd check. To be fair, Germany have done very well at Winter Olypics during the last 30 years.

Russia must be the favourites this time around.
How do I post these pictures???

Suppose there weren't awards to be given out to said participants.

Would the athletic endeavors be less competitive?

All medals and the list looks like this. German nations haven't been worse than 2nd since 1980.

    1980 DDR 23 (GER 0)

    1984 USSR 25 (2nd DDR 24, GER 4)

    1988 USSR 29 (2nd DDR 25, GER 8)

    1992 GER 26

    1994 Norway 26 (2nd GER 24)

    1998 GER 29

    2002 GER 36

    2006 GER 29

    2010 USA 37 (2nd GER 30)

And no, Russia is not a favourite. They don't lead any world cup in winter sports in this season, they have no stars this time.

With the stars standing right and coincidence/luck going our way, Denmark just might pick up a bronze in Curling

I watched ladies Alpine yesterday and today, the US ladies are pretty poor in the absence of the injured Lindsey Vonn in the speed disciplines. That was one with multiple shots at medals, who could have rivaled Bjoergen and Domracheva for the title of queen of Sochi.

Here's the projection of the Wall Street Journal.

Norway won at the Nordic World Championships last year 16 Gold and 30 medals in all. This year they look even stronger.

And so is Bruno Banani from Tonga in the luge track, who adopted the name of the German underwear maker.

Back to real sport, the 40 years old Ole Einar Bjoerndalen won the Biathlon sprint today, becoming the shared most successful athlete at winter games equaling Bjoern Daehli's 12 medals. He won 96 individual world cup races in Biathlon and Cross country, 21 times with Norwegian relay teams, and 19 world championships, all unrivalled achievements. Arguably the greatest athlete ever of any sport.

That's funny. Reminds me of local papers that included my state in Germany in the lists seperately.

Germany is on top of the list with 6 gold medals now, and that's despite an abyssmal performance, no medals in Biathlon, Cross Country, and Speed Skating which always contributed the majority. Remarkable. It's not gonna last for long, though.

Years ago on a trip through New Zealand an American asked Me in a mocking tone "How many Medals did You guys win at the Olympics"?
Well the Media in the U.K only focus on Team Great Britain winning medals,no other team counts. We only hear about our wins, not yours,so for us,regardless how many medals won by others, only ours counts.
    So we won,again.

Now Germany and Norway produce failure after failure, and the Netherlands lead, 17 medals overall. For fukc's sake, the Durch have nothing but speed skating! Meet their delegation. What an efficiency!

Bjoerndalen did it again, gold medal in the mixed relay. Now he leads all statistics there are alone.

Sochi 2014: David Morris scores silver in aerial skiing, an Australian first
    Tuesday 18 February 2014

Melbourne-born competitor’s ability to consistently nail landings takes Australia’s medal tally to three

David Morris has secured Australia’s first ever Winter Olympics medal in the men’s aerials competition by claiming silver in Sochi.

The Victorian’s second place means Australia now has three medals at the Games.

Morris’ teammate Lydia Lassila took bronze in the women’s aerials on Friday following Torah Bright’s snowboard silver in the Sochi halfpipe.

Anton Kushnir from Belarus won gold on Monday night with a score of 134.50.

China’s Zongyang Jia took the bronze with 95.06 behind Morris on 110.41.

Morris said he wasn’t expecting to claim a medal on Monday night. “We dream about it but the field that was here today is an incredible field,” the 29-year-old told Network Ten. “You saw the quality of the jumps and some of these guys just got quite unlucky.”

Morris said if his rivals had landed their best jumps there was no way he’d have come second. “I know that, I’m not the best jumper out here,” he said. “I consistently land though and that always puts you in the top 10, top eight and, today, top four and – second!”

He used his moment in the spotlight to call for a water ramp in Australia to help athletes prepare for future events. “We don’t have one and now we have two Olympic medals – just saying,” he said.

Morris was Australia’s last genuine medal hope in Russia with only outside prospects remaining for the last week of competition. He was Australia’s lone men’s aerial skier.

Melbourne-born Morris qualified second for the Olympic finals before landing his next three jumps to take out the silver medal.
