The first stage today was won by Cavendish, a flat one for the sprinters. The Giro is the most challenging of the grand tours, more and higher mountains than on the other two, longer stages up to 260 km. This year there is a climb 80km long, a crossing to France to climb a pass that featured prominently in the 2011 TDF, higher than 2,600 metres, and the 2nd highest pass in Europe, the Stilfser Joch at 2,760 metres.
Competitive line up with Nibali, Wiggins, Evans, Hesjedal, Sammy Sanchez, Gesingk, Cobo, and Scarponi. Notable absentees are Contador, Rodriguez, and Froome, obviously targeting the TDF.
