I was aware of that 10m rule (which, for the record, I think is utterly wanked) but as far as I know there's no obligation to stand and watch. Teams have buggered off and done warm ups and what-not previously.

Wasn't aware of that Waltzing Matilda bit though - although to be fair a song about some Aussie being busted with a sheep and committing suicide from the shame of it all shouldn't be encouraged.

    Yes, of course.
Come to think of it, my little half-Maori cousin does it (and he isn't an International!!)

So each team stands there and does it to each other I guess.

True, I damn near shed a tear when I first saw that.

Actually come to think of it they've fared even worse in the modern iterations, the Lions tours. NZ's a veritable grave-yard for them.

Haka is just yet another suck up to the Kiwi's by the IRB. In terms of Rugby, here is the roots of it.

The words being used are "with a little bit of this, and a little bit of that, and your shake your arse...."

Gives unfair advantage because whilst they are pouncing around like a load of fairies, the other team has to stand and watch, getting cold. They should have to do it before the anthems and it is up to the other team if they can be arsed to go out early to see it or not.

When you see that, the idea that it is sacred and special to Rugby is simply ludicrous. Also, they are doing it to the crowd not to the Baa baa's.

Well the fact that American Fussball teams are now doing a haka shows it for what it is I fear.

Not as long as you haven't promised anyone you wouldn't and are now going back on your word about it.

Anyways I've always found it curious as to why other challenges such as the Cibi or Sivu tau don't appear to engender any negativity. And it's all from the fans and media (both overwhelmingly NH at that) as far as I can tell - the only thing I've ever heard from any Internationals who have faced it was how much they liked it.

NFL Style? I can't see You Tube, but I can guarantee that is not an NFL team doing a haka.

    a) they don't have a choice.
    b) they are likely to be fined / penalised for voicing dissension against it.

Most England international I have had a beer with including a family member say its a great annoyance; they come out of the changing room, line up, sing the anthems, and then want to get on with it except against the ABs where they have to hang around for 5 minutes getting cold, forced to watch the haka, and are told prior to it not to do anything. In the media they may say one things, but when they are talking freely they say it for what it is; unfair advantage.

My view is simple; do it before the anthems, and the other team chooses if they want to come out or not. Anything else is unfair.

Also, Australia and Safrica who face it most are the biggest countries against it. Universal almost. Shame that the IRB only represents NZ and not Rugby lol

I'm mostly referring to ex-players. I can't see how current players can be fined for having an opinion though.

Are the Cibi or Sivu tau an unfair advantage too? Why aren't they routinely mentioned in that way.

If I were a more cynical sort of chap I'd suggest it's probably because Tonga, Samoa and Fiji don't routinely whip the NH sides.

Same for all Haka's. However, Tonga, Samoa and Fiji do not field teams half full of people of European heritage who have no claim in the Haka.

Check out the 2011 World Cup squads for Tonga and Samoa - I think you'll find the majority were born in NZ. Besides, the haka has nothing to do with racial heritage it's about NZ and All Blacks heritage.

Frankly I find it rather bemusing about how het up some people get over it. If there were as much focus on actually playing the All Blacks as opposed to worrying about some alleged unfair advantage the magically haka bestows on them then teams might have better win/loss ratios against them. Can't beat them on the field, try to beat them off it.

Love it or hate it it's a unique aspect of rugby that other international sports simply don't have.

    ^American Fussball has it now

OK - so look at it from another viewpoint. Boxing. You have two fighters at the top of their game facing off. They both walk in to music blaring, all pumped up, ready to fight, and then one of them is told to sit in the corner and not move whilst the other one has three minutes to get in his face and pump himself up further. If the other boxer gets out of his corner he is fined 15k USD. Then when it is finished, ding ding, time to fight. Imagine also if the little show from pumped up boxer claimed it was his heritage, and thus to say no to it was racist despite the fact that he only started doing his little dance a year before hand to the audience, and gradually moved it further into the fight time. Is this fair?

(this is on topic by the way because the Haka is rather homoerotic and more a display for the gays in the audience I think)

    ^ boxing

you've knocked out your own argument

one boxer arrives in ring after a slow walk through the crowd with 'his' music playing, several minutes later, a 'fashionable late' opponent does the same walk with 'his' music while fighter #1 waits. And waits.

    Time for a haka, easy
