    Qatar World Cup 2022

World Cup in Qatar 'impossible' in summer, says Greg Dyke

By Dan Roan BBC chief sports correspondent
    9 August 2013 Last updated at 22:37

A summer World Cup in Qatar in 2022 would be "impossible", says Football Association chairman Greg Dyke.
Dyke, who took up his FA role last month, thinks the tournament is likely to move to winter because of the heat.

The Premier League opposes a change of dates, while Dyke's predecessor David Bernstein said in June that any switch would be "fundamentally flawed".

But Qatar's World Cup organising committee says it is ready to host the tournament in summer.

"Even if all the stadia are air-conditioned, I think it will be impossible for the fans," Dyke said.

"Just go out there and wander around in that sort of heat. I just don't think it's possible.

"My position, and I suspect the FA's position, will be: 'You can't play it in the summer.'"

The Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee told BBC Sport in a statement: "It was the right decision to award the World Cup to the Middle East for the first time in 2022.

"We are ready to host in summer or winter. We have always maintained that this issue requires the agreement of the international football community.

"A decision to alter the dates of the 2022 Fifa World Cup would not affect our infrastructure planning."

The Premier League is understood to be surprised and disappointed by Dyke's comments, as it wishes to join forces with the FA in opposing a change of date.

Richard Scudamore, the Premier League chief executive, said in July that switching the Qatar World Cup to winter would cause chaos for football leagues around the world.

His organisation believes such a change would have an impact on the three domestic seasons around the tournament - most notably 2021-22 - affecting broadcast deals and requiring every player's contract to be rewritten.

In 2010 Qatar defeated bids from South Korea, Japan, Australia and the United States to be awarded the 2022 World Cup.

The bid has been plagued by allegations of corruption, although organisers have always insisted they did nothing wrong.

Temperatures in the Middle East state can reach 50C in the summer, and Fifa general secretary Jerome Valcke admitted in March that the tournament might be moved.

Fifa president Sepp Blatter said in May it was "not rational" to play in such heat.

But shortly before stepping down as FA chairman, Bernstein said there should be no change.

"The bid was for the World Cup to be played in June and July, and for it then to be moved to the winter would be fundamentally flawed," he said.

"If people want it in the winter, they should bid for it on that basis."
Dyke, though, believes a move is inevitable, and suspects there is likely to be legal action as a result.

The 66-year-old, who has visited Qatar in June, added: "Fifa have therefore got two choices. They can move it either time-wise or to another location. I suspect either will end up in some sort of litigation. But then someone should have worked that out in 2010 when it was awarded.

"I understand the reaction of the Premier League in not wanting to move it, and I have some sympathy with them.

"We didn't have to choose to give it to Qatar in the summer. But that's where it is, and I think it will either have to be moved out of the summer or moved to another location.

"I suspect that the former is more likely than the latter."
FA general secretary Alex Horne said any change to the international calendar would trigger complications for clubs, national associations, leagues and competitions around the world.

"It's a big jigsaw that'll have to be put together and it'll take months. The last time we did this it took 18 months to agree a calendar which is the one we're looking for 2014-18, so it won't be quick to fix it if the decision is that we think it should be other than in July," he said.

BBC Sport - World Cup in Qatar 'impossible' in summer, says Greg Dyke
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!"

    Analysis

"Greg Dyke was in relaxed but firm mood today as he spoke to journalists about one of the biggest issues in football, wasting little time in making his mark as the new FA chairman. Until today, the governing body had avoided taking a position on Fifa's hugely controversial decision to award Qatar the 2022 World Cup.

"Dyke sympathises with the Premier League, who are vehemently opposed to a winter tournament, but his insistence that a change of schedule or location is required for the sake of fans is bound to cause friction with the clubs.

"Two and a half years after Qatar was awarded the event, pressure is now mounting on Fifa to end the uncertainty, with a decision pencilled in for October.

"For years, football has wrestled with how Qatar won the right to host the tournament. Now debate will focus on when it should take place. The fall-out could be as litigious and divisive as anything the game has ever seen."

"I personally believe that the domestic league season should remain more or less the way it is now, running from August to May.

"I think football is a winter game, that the public greatly enjoy their football through the winter and that we should think very carefully before we take football away from the public in the winter."

David Bernstein, then-FA chairman, arguing against moving the World Cup on 7 June

Says it all really that they are likely to reschedule all the league games to accommodate Qatar, rather than hold their hands up and say, ok this is not going to work.

The fall-out could be as litigious and divisive as anything the game has ever seen.

A winter break would need to be introduced to fall in line with most other leagues. This would mean sacrificing the boxing day and new year matches that are a fundamental part of English footballing tradition. Can't be allowed to happen.

There is only one sensible and logical solution. The tournament needs to be taken away and given to the USA or OZ where it should have gone in the first place. Won't happen though.

Medical reports had already been made clarifying that it wasn't safe to play at that time if year BEFORE they won the vote.

UEFA should tell FIFA to fuck off, without Europe's participation, the TV revenue is worthless.

The trouble is, Platini has his tongue up Blatter's arse, and he wants his job when he retires.

With concerns regarding the high summer temperatures in host country Qatar, the suggestion to delay has been mooted, but the FA chief warned of clashing with domestic football

Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore believes moving the 2022 World Cup in Qatar is "nigh on impossible".

Concerns have been raised about the temperatures in the Middle East country June and July, with speculation the tournament could be moved to cooler months despite clashing with domestic football calendars in many countries.

Scudamore insisted this would cause too much disruption around the world, and called on Fifa to consult with all parties before making any decision.

"It's extremely difficult [to move it], nigh on impossible in our view," he told Sky Sports News. "Where they award the World Cup to is entirely the Fifa executive committee's decision, entirely their decision, not our business.

"The international football calendar is one that has to be consulted though; it is not something FIFA can just decide because the whole of world football has an interest in that.

"There is a whole series of complications around that and that consultation process has to be a separate consultation process with leagues and associations on a global basis, not just the Premier League and European Leagues, to make sure it works for everybody."

Qatar was chosen to host the 2022 tournament in 2010, beating USA, South Korea, Japan and Australia in the voting process.

Does it matter, given the number of nationalities that play in England, Spain, France, Germany and Italy? All of whom I hope tell Blatter to fuck off.

Perhaps because not everyone in their most lucrative market can stay up all night?

    Just guessing.

I see where you're going with that idea... they can switch off the floodlights and make a fortune on the Chinese gambling syndicate... mmm Sepp might just go for that

The WC finals have been held in various different time zones , so the kick off time shouldnt be a problem .

International lawyers must be drooling over this.
Qatar have already started a £100bn building programme on the strength of a contract with FIFA.

I do also wonder what the reasoning is behind this huge investment, how will Qatar get a return ?

I had heard that but are they giving them to African states ? Would the receiving countries be able to maintain them or are they just white elephants.
I am just curious as to why Qatar wanted to be involved at all, never mind the huge cost.
Maybe I am just being synical looking for a hidden agenda.

Sepp Blatter at 77, has probably already benefited financially from the sale of the World Cup Finals to Qatar so with the heat on (pun intended) following one of the strangest decisions in footballing history he would do well to step aside and not involve himself any further with this debacle.

    Bobby Charlton for President?

I lived in Qatar for 3 years, and though there has been substantial new developments since I was there, these are based around hotels and shopping malls. It is in effect a one city (Doha) country, with 2 smaller towns servicing the oil and gas industries in the north and the south. Unlike the Olympics, which is centred around one city and the majority of those who attend are either locals or friends/family of those competing, the World Cup is spread around a country with hundreds of thousands of visiting supporters.

Qatar, is not as liberal as say Dubai, and bad behaviour just wouldn't be tolerated. I think I'm also right in saying that FIFA demand that beer be available in the stadiums (which I think has caused problems in Brazil for their World Cup next year where they'd recently banned alcohol) not least because one of their major sponsors is Budweiser.

Qatar's population (of actual Qataris) is only circa 250,000, boosted by foreign workers (mainly from other Arab countries, the sub continent, and the Phillipines) to around 1 million. The summer, apart from being incredibly hot (minimum 40 to 50 deg shade tempreture every day) is also incredibly humid. Walk out of any air conditioned environment (car, building) and sun glasses are instantly 'fogged' with condensation).

All of this was known of course during the bidding process, and how anyone could justify the award of a summer tournament to Qatar is either a fool or much more likely corrupt. It's like awarding the Winter Olympics to Las Vegas.

Moving the tournament to the winter (which, one before 2021/22 or one after 2022/23?) would also potential clash with the African Cup of Nations, played bi-annually, and where many countries top league teams (England in particular) lose players for a month or so.

Stop moaning and play the tournament in June. Yeah, it's hot. May the strongest team win. Players from Africa and the Middle East have no trouble to play on snowy days in Europe, either. I wonder what would happen if Israel qualified? They never did and never will of course, just a mind exercise.

When the body gets too hot through, the body begins to close itself down .
When the body gets above a certain temperature, the body stop perspiring which causes the body to overheat which can lead to death .
Just walking around in 50C heat can be dangerous, running around for 90 minutes in 50C could be fatal

Doesn't matter, the right people got their money so the death toll becomes irrelevant. And we won't hear much from an obedient media about arrests for offences against Islam, so that's ok too.
