    AFC Asian Football cup

Now go easy with me here because unlike flower arranging and formation ironing, football is something I am very vague about.

But I gather from a friend who lives on some small island south of here (Austria I think he said it was) that there is a soccer contest going on in July and he asked me where tickets could be bought from.

I have enough difficulty getting a train ticket so really don't know where to start - any suggestions - polite and constructive ones please.
    Lord, deliver us from e-mail.

If you're going to a game in Thailand, you should be able to just turn up at the stadium and buy your ticket. That's what I've done before.

Well I did manage to get tickets for one of the games - Australia v Thailand. Only the second football game I have ever been to and almost certainly the last as well.

I gather that Australia just managed to scrape a draw against Iraq on Sunday. I suppose the Iraqis have the added incentive that if they lose and get kicked out they'll have to go back to Iraq.

I thought it was Thailand who got the draw. I shall check.

Ah! Australia were playing Oman - that shows how closely I follow the game.

    Where is Oman anyway?

    tell me about it!

i suspect that the boys were somewhat cocky going into this tournament.... idiots!

I've got tickets to the final of the Group A draw (played in Jakarta end of this month)

At this rate it will probably be Thailand vs Iraq

    (best $50 I eva spent!)

I will be there for that game. I better get a yellow T shirt I suppose; I wouldn't want anyone to think I was supporting Australia.

saw singapore vs australia a couple of weeks back with my son.

ok the aussies won 0-3 in the end, but singapore hit the crossbar and the post before australia finally opened the scoring in the second half when singapore were puffed out.

australia didnt really impress and it looks like this is continuing in this tournament. Still nice to see that australia still brought out their best team for a friendly (this was to mark the last day of the Singapore National stadium)

i dont really know why Singapore arent in this tourney as they are the SE Asian champs. Maybe there were qualifiers and i wasnt concentrating.

It's the big one tonight. I hope the Aussies have reserved their plane tickets for the trip home.

^ yeah yeah yeah, all the aussie papers this morning are carrying on about how great the socceroos are and how they've silenced their critics yadda yadda yadda.

truth be known, anyone who watched that game would have seen the we had one early goal - then almost the rest of the match the thai's were all over the aussie defence (which was still made up of a bunch of individuals) and threatened to score on a couple of occassions - there was at least 2 close ones.

and we were lucky not to concede a goal or two.

final couple of minutes thai's forgot to play and the socceroos lifted their game (helped that the game was later in the day and it was raining, cos those boys aint fit enough to play in da heat.)

anyway Japan later this week now!

    interesting.

It was a good game. Thailand deserved something from the game, but the second goal killed their spirit.

    Shame really.

    C'mon you Nips!!

Match report by Man on the Terrorist Watch List

I drove up form HH in the morning and booked into the Nana. After having a light lunch I left for the stadium. Tried to hail a taxi but he refused to go and advised getting the Skytrain part way and then taxi from there.

When I got off the Skytrain it was obvious that I was never going to get a taxi from there either so hopped on a bus. I met up with two Aussies going to the match who knew where to get off the bus, which was more than I did.

I reckon it took 2.5 hours to get to the ground; about the same time it took to me to get to Bangers from HH. The result was that I got to the ground just as the second half started. Score 1-0 to Aussies. Thailand seemed to be pressing attacks but unable to convert them into goals. The Aussies scored again and Thailand then crumbled with two more goals scored in relatively quick succession. I found the atmosphere far more gripping than the game itself which only had peripheral interest for me. The Thai supporters seemed fairly undaunted by the result, the Aussies of whom there were loads (must have been every Aussie in Bangkok at the stadium that night) were obviously ecstatic.

I guess that the rain which fell throughout the match helped the Aussies a lot by cooling the air but both teams seemed to be suffering from the loss of control that the wet conditions caused.

Getting away was also a nightmare.

Undoubtedly the last time I will go to a football match. You would need to be a masochist to go through that just to watch 22 sweaty men chasing a ball around.

^ It is a nightmare getting to and from the game on match day. The best way is to use the boat service.

I only go to games it they're at the National Stadium as it's an easy-peasy ride on the Skytrain.
