    Race walking

Who is your all time favourite race walker, and why? What is your opinion on the future of race walking?

I believe it has a slightly higher chance of longevity than this thread.

It depends on what distance you're talking about - in my opinion there is no-one to touch the magnificent Jefferson Perez in the shorter distance categories, but if you want true stamina I'd go for Nizhegorodov.

The Russians dominate the womens event, but I think we've all seen Russian women before and understand why.

That is without a doubt an interesting point. The noble sport of race walking has been surrounded by controversy. After all, most people run faster than they race walk. So why compete in it all?

No takers? This is the best thread in the entire sports forum, but you are not posting. Obviously you are just jealous and wish you had thought of the idea yourselves.

I don't think that they ALL cheat, but I think that the whole concept of seeing who can walk the fastest is ridiculous.

I don't think there is any other competition where the natural tendency to do something - in this case, to run - is forbidden, and the competitor has to limit what he can do - i.e. walk, don't run - in order to win.

I seriously doubt whether any "winner" has never taken both feet off the ground at some point during the race.

Oh, and one more thing, the people "race walking" look so bloody stupid.

But it is a highly evolved form of sport in that it requires an immense amount of self control not to run.

One could also say that the natural instinct when it comes to football, is to attack one's opponents instead of trying to take the ball from them by skill... it is in fact highly unnatural to kick a circular lump of leather around a field.

Well, you could say that any sport that has been elevated to the dizzying heights of an Olympic sport should be highly evolved.

But race walking isn't. And it bears no comparison at all with football. Have a read of this article that I just came across:

The last good thing to come out of race-walking was Walk, Don't Run, the 1966 Cary Grant-Samantha Eggar-Jim Hutton movie. Since then it's been all downhill. TV hates it. Spectators won't pay to watch it. And no one who isn't in the Olympics practices it, since that ridiculous shamble leads to the utter ruination of your hips. It's so contrived. Why race walking? It isn't fast. It isn't graceful. It isn't even natural. It's a Fourth of July picnic event. Why not an Olympic three-legged race? How about a race that demands walking on your hands? How about race-praying, in which competitors would walk 20 kilometers on their knees?

Thursday may have been race walking's nadir, and that's saying something. In the last kilometer of the women's 20K walk, all three leaders were disqualified. Not for drugs, happily, but for not "walking" legally.

There is too much crap in the Olympics, and "race-walking" is one event that should be deleted.

I think it needs to be livened up to grab the public's attention. How about combining it with 'three legged race'?
