    Asean Cup 2007

Just got home after watching Singapore beat the old enemy Malaysia on penalties in the semi-final, terrible game but all good entertainment if you are at the game.

My son really impressed me with his enthusiasm for shouting vulgarities in Malay.

Now bring on Thailand in the final.

If the Thais dont kick Singapore's ass I will be really surprised.

Could be a bit of a grudge match given the current political climate

Yeah shite, but 55,000 people were there so it so it was quite a good atmosphere. And at only S$10 for the most expensive seat it is a cheap nights entertainment.

i used to be a Wimbledon FC fan so I know what I am talking about

.........its going to get nasty on sunday

but really i think the Thais behaviour was absolutely ridiculous.

SINGAPORE : Singapore defeated Thailand 2-1 in the Asean Football Championship first-leg final held at the National Stadium on Wednesday.

Singapore dominated the first half. Noh Alam Shah put the home side ahead in the 17th minute, much to the delight of the 60,000 crowd.

Thailand fought back in the second half and was rewarded in the 50th minute. A defensive error by the Singapore side allowed Pipat Thonkanya to equalise.

Play was held up minutes before full-time after Thai officials disputed a controversial penalty awarded to Singapore, and refused to continue with the match.

Malaysian referee C. Ravichandran awarded the spot kick to Singapore after Noh Alam Shah was adjudged to have been brought down by Thailand's Niweat Siriwong.

Singapore officials were seen in the field trying to persuade the Thai team to resume play.

The match later resumed with Singapore scoring the penalty kick through Mustafic Fahrudin in the 98th minute.

Singapore will meet Thailand in their second-leg final in Bangkok on February 4. - CNA/de

One could say a real man wouldn't need to ask permission, but then I've been married to a thai girl so I guess that look was a genuine threat! We all feel for your predicament, no really, we do!

    Keep on topic will you?

I thought the Thai's acted completly in character and thereby lost 'face' by their actions (which will be ignored and denied anyway.) the thai football team has always been a joke, since selection to the team is not based on ability alone.

However, in cricket if a team refuses to remain on field the game is forfeit, why did this not happen with the football?

there is still one leg to go and money to be made.

hopefully the thais will be soundly beaten, but I fear they will win on sunday.

    then things will get interesting

imagine Singapore had missed the penalty - they'd be saying the Thais put them off or something - bit of a farce really

Thai footballers face Sunday match ban

    (Agencies)
Thai players and officials face suspension from Sunday's second and final leg of the Asean championship series following the team's dramatic first-leg walkout against rivals Singapore, the Asean Football Federation said on Thursday.

Singapore won a bitterly-fought match 2-1 on Wednesday after the Thai players walked off the field for 15 minutes following a hotly disputed penalty award to Singapore eight minutes from time. Singapore eventually scored the penalty and won 2-1.

Anyone found guilty of orchestrating the protest or manhandling the referee could be banned from the second leg in Bangkok on Sunday.

"The Asean Football Federation are studying the relevant reports from the match commissioner and referees inspector," an AFF spokesman told the Reuters news agency.

"Based on the records, action will be taken against anyone guilty of wrong-doing in the 1st leg."

A capacity crowd at the Singapore National Stadium booed and jeered as the Thai team walked, preventing the penalty being taken.

Thai workers protest in Singapore against the football match

Thai workers in Singapore staged protest Thursday following a controversial footballl match between Thailand and Singapore, according to the Labour Ministry.
Thailand lost 2-1 to Singapore in the first leg of the Asean Football Championship on Wednesday mainly due to the controversial penalty kick awarded to Singapore.

The Labour Ministry now expressed concerns about the protest, fearing that things might get out of control.

Well the match seemed to go off without any problems. a red team and a blue team and of course the crowd was all yellow - strange sight.

Game played at a good pace Thailand had chances to win but I must admit to having cheered Singapore on as my frustration with LOS is at an all time high.

I now wonder how the Thai media etc will work out how the loss was down to foreigners.

Well I suyppose it was. Singaporeans and good luck to them
