United battle for Cup victory
By Alex Livie - Created on 27 Feb 07
Manchester United hit Reading with a three-goal blitz in the first six minutes, but they were still made to work hard to book their place
STEVE COPPELL is convinced Manchester United can scent another Treble.
Alex Ferguson would love a repeat of his 1999 trio of trophies.
And Reading boss and former Old Trafford hero Coppell said: “The one they want more than any other from a professional point of view is the Premiership.
“After two years of Chelsea winning it, I know Alex Ferguson wants to take that one back.
"The Champions League is always the Holy Grail for United. But the knock-out stages are difficult and you can’t afford to make any mistakes.
“Even at this stage, they are going to need all their players fit and performing in every game.
“As for the FA Cup, as far as I am concerned they are one of only four teams who can win it — if they choose to.”
LIVERPOOL keeper Jose Reina reckons opposite number Edwin van der Sar is key to Manchester United’s success this year.
The two old enemies go head-to-head at Anfield on Saturday.
Reina reckons Van der Sar is among the best in the world — but expects the Merseysiders to dent United’s title hopes by taking the three points.
Spaniard Reina said: “Edwin is a big part of their success. He is so consistent and one of the best keepers in the world.Reina: Edwin

MANCHESTER UNITED have signed identical Brazilian twins as their future full-backs.
Fabio and Rafael Silva put pen to paper on pre-contract agreements from Brazilian side Fluminese.
The youth internationals will join up with United on July 9, when they turn 18.
Rafael revealed it was Cristiano Ronaldo who sealed the deal.
The right-back said: “When we were negotiating, Cristiano Ronaldo phoned us saying that Manchester United was a tremendous club and it was a wonderful place to play football.”
Left-back Fabio said: “We were there to be familiar with the club and we played part of a friendly match.
“We were on the same pitch as Rooney and Ronaldo. They were very kind with us.”

Rio Ferdinand claims Saturday's visit to arch rivals Liverpool holds no fears for Manchester United.
Ferdinand has backed the Premiership leaders to be more expansive in their performance than the last time they visited Anfield in a goalless draw in September 2005.
The fixture is invariably keenly contested but Ferdinand is keen to ignore the hype and focus only on another potential three points for United.
"It's a massive game and we want to get a good result," Ferdinand told Sky Sports News. "Hopefully we can go there and put on a better show than the last time we were there.
"It's only down the motorway, there's great tradition and rivalry between the two clubs and I think it's getting enhanced year by year. The media make a big deal about it, the players feel that, the fans feel that.
"It's going to be a great atmosphere and one we're looking forward to."
ALEX FERGUSON has been told he can have the cash to sign the best players in Europe this summer.
Manchester United have just announced a new multi-million pound sponsorship deal with a Spanish company promoting residential properties worldwide.
The five-year contract is one of a series of partnerships that emphasise United’s global appeal and will provide funds for boss Ferguson.
CRISTIANO RONALDO insists he would rather win the Premiership than the Champions League — because it is the road heroes walk.
The Manchester United star is aiming to fire his side past Euro rivals Lille into the quarter-finals tonight.
But he claims his main goal is still domestic glory.
Ronaldo, 22, said: “Both are important but I think the Premier League is the road the heroes walk.
“I think it’s the most important. Of course the Champions League is great — great to win.
“But if it’s not possible to win both my priority is the Premier League.”
Ronnie has gone from Public Enemy No 1 to a contender for Player of the Year by helping the Reds go nine points clear in the league.
With Barcelona sniffing about, United are desperate to extend the Portuguese winger’s deal — and are prepared to double his salary to a whopping £100,000-a-week.
But Ronnie insists making football history is his main motivation, not the money.
He said: “Of course the money is good for me, I help my family. This is good.
“But the past one or two years I think my motivation is not the money. My motivation is to be part of football history. This is what I try to do — train hard, play well, win trophies. I think this is most important for me.
“There are a few lads, when they have the money too early, the football is the second thing.
“I think I’m good because I don’t think about this.
“I put my football first and after my family and the money.”
Fergie tells Sky Sports reporter straight
ALEX FERGUSON launched a foul-mouthed attack on a TV reporter in a bust-up over Cristiano Ronaldo.
Manchester United’s boss called Sky’s Geoff Shreeves a ‘f*****g bastard’ and told him to ‘f**k off’.
Ferguson was furious with Shreeves for questioning his Portuguese wing wizard about allegedly cheating for his controversial penalty winner against Middlesbrough in Monday’s FA Cup clash.
The fiery Scot’s off-camera rant was so loud a BBC interview with Boro chief Gareth Southgate had to be abandoned.
Shreeves grilled Ronaldo about his latest ‘cheat’ storm in the tunnel after the quarter-final replay.
Beeb reporter Ivan Gaskell then tried to record Southgate’s verdict on the defeat for Match of the Day, only to have his work wind up on the cutting-room floor thanks to Ferguson.
Here is the full transcript of the blast at Shreeves from Fergie’s renowned ‘Hairdryer’.
SHREEVES ... questions
SHREEVES: “I asked him . . . ”
FERGUSON: “F*****g (inaudible) bastard.”
S: “Don’t talk to me like that.”
F: “F**k off to you.”
S: “Don’t talk to me like that. Don’t even think about it.”
F: “Don’t you think about it, you ****. F**k off. Right?”
S: “Listen, are you going to do the interview in a professional manner or not? Do you want to do it or not?”
F: “You f*****g be professional. You be professional. You’re the one.”
S: “I’m entitled to ask . . . . Cristiano gave the right answer.”
F: “F*****g hell with your answers.”
S: “Don’t talk to me like that. Go away. If you want to behave civilly, fine. Don’t talk to me like that.”
F: “F**k off.” (door slams).
NI_MPU('middle');NI_MPU('Embedded for DHTML'); Gaskell to Southgate: “I’m going to have to ask that question again, if that’s all right.”
Ferguson later announced he was ‘disgusted’ at Shreeves’ ‘disgraceful’ TV interview with Ronaldo.
He said of Monday’s spot-kick and Boro’s anger: “It was a clear penalty. It’s a shame. They are putting a stigma against the boy that he doesn’t deserve.”
Ferguson is a piece of trash.
Good to see Ferguson disgracing himself and his club once again....
Manchester-Rome 7-1
well done
^They were lucky!
Could be a Chelsea v ManU FA Cup, Champions League final, and of course there's still the Premiership. A great year for both clubs. Ronaldo, whatever you may think of him, has been extra-special this year.
If Man U do pick up either the Champions' League or the Premiership I reckon that it would a good time for Sir Alex to call it a day after a sparkling managerial career.
nb: If Chelsea do win all four trophies available to them I think that they should call it achieving The Quaddle.
Back off Margaret, you're on a sugar rush!
Could be a dodgy return in Milan....2 away goals.....fok
I reckon that they'll have to score two - I do hope that they can do it - Ronaldo's on a 'yellow' too I believe - There could be tears.
Could be a Liverpool v Man United final....That'd be nice.
Nah, I'm keeping me fingers crossed. Scholesy is on a yellow too.
