    A Grand Day Out

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    Jump to: navigation, search

Wallace and Gromit picnic on the moon

A Grand Day Out (full name A Grand Day Out with Wallace and Gromit) is a 1989 animated film directed and animated by Nick Park at Aardman Animations in Bristol, featuring his characters Wallace and Gromit. This was the first adventure featuring the eccentric inventor Wallace and his quiet but smart dog Gromit. It was followed by 1993's The Wrong Trousers and 1995's A Close Shave.
Nick Park started making the film in 1982 as his graduation project for the National Film and Television School. Aardman Animations took him on before he finished the piece, allowing him to work on it part time while still being funded by the school.

^^ how the hell are you getting it at 47%

and by the way did anyone notice that i mentioned that grommitt never talks ? WELL - turns out i was wrong ?

In the scene where Gromit is having trouble with the drill, after is through spinning, he is thrown by the force of the drill. During this shot you can clearly hear Gromit yelping - the truth that Gromit did indeed speak.
MtD - perhaps we should change the title of this thread to

"Interesting facts about Wallace and Grommitt" or

    "I love Wallace and Grommitt"

mind you, cousins accross the sea (seppos) might feel left out cos everyone knows they dont get subtle humour!

Summary - A grand day out!

Wallace and Gromit are devastated when they realize that they have run out of cheese. With the local corner shop closed for the Bank Holiday, Wallace decides to take a trip to the moon, as "everybody knows the moon's made of cheese". Naturally he has to take his faithful dog with him. The two build a rocket in Wallace's basement and set off to the moon. Upon landing, Wallace tries the "cheese" but starts to question his theory on the moon. Also, a strange coin-operated robot shaped like an oven (complete with arms, wheels and an optic eye) is encountered by the duo and seems to wish to go with them to Earth so he can try out some skiing. Wallace and Gromit believe it is after them for stealing the moon cheese and try to escape. The robot breaks into the rocket but is blown out by a gas explosion, allowing Wallace and Gromit to escape back home. The robot lives happily ever after when he uses wreckage from the rocket as skiing equipment.
The 24 minutes are packed with sight gags and exaggerated physical comedy, as well as a few subtle film parodies. Voice acting is the sole duty of Peter Sallis (the voice of Wallace). Gromit remains silent throughout almost all of the film, the only exception being a whimper as he falls foul of an electric drill.
A Grand Day Out was commissioned by Colin Rose of the BBC (source: Wallace and Gromit character website), but the film short may have actually had its British television debut as part of Channel 4's 4-mations series.
    bladdy great stuff too!

    Great quotes.

    A Grand Day Out (1989)

    • "Eeeeeeeeee, these bank holidays, it's a problem to decide..."
    • "Gromit, that's it! Cheese! We'll go somewhere where there's cheese!"
    • Robot: Dee dee dee deee! -picks up book and thinks of skiing -
    • "No crackers, Gromit! We've forgotten the crackers!"
    • "No cheese, Gromit. Not a bit in the house."
    • "The fuse Gromit! The fuse! We forgot to light the fuse!"
    • "Everybody knows the moon is made of cheese..."
In light of some other threads i've read recently - I could imagine Kerux posting about 60 pages of dribble "proving" this last quote!

Whats your favourite quote here ??

yep - they I havent gotten around to watching the feature length film "curse of the were-rabbit"

    heres some other interesting Tidbits

Here are a few subtle jokes from the film.
    • One of the characters from Aardman Animation's Creature Comforts can be seen in the museum.
    • When trying to get Gromit out of the house, the penguin plays Organ music very loudly on the radio, including "(How Much Is) That Doggie in the Window?" and "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Old Oak Tree", the latter a hint of previous jail time. (However, see alternate versions of music note below).
    • Wallace's spare money is kept in a piggy bank, stored in a safe, which is stereotypically hidden behind a painting on the wall. The trouble with this 'hidden' wealth, however, is that the painting is of a piggy bank.
    • The Morning Post that Gromit is reading at the start of the film has as its main headline, "Moon Cheese prices soar!", an obvious reference to A Grand Day Out.
    • As Gromit watches television whilst eating breakfast, the Open University fanfare and a continuity announcement can be heard. However, the fanfare had not been used for two years by the time this film was released. Additionally, the fanfare was changed to a generic trumpet piece for the DVD release.
    • On the penguin's blueprint of the museum, "The Long Room" denotes the long room through which the Techno-trousers and Wallace must walk on the ceiling on their way to the diamond. "The Long Room" at Lord's is also a shrine in cricket circles.
    • When Gromit is spying on Feathers, he hides in a box on the front it reads Meatabix, a pun on the breakfast cereal Weetabix.
    • In the museum, a mask resembling Alfred Hitchcock can be seen. Many see The Wrong Trousers as a tribute to this master filmmaker, and the scene where Feathers McGraw is shown upstairs seems eerily reminiscent of Hitchcock's own early masterpiece entitled The Lodger.
    • Also in the museum, there can be seen a statue of Wallace and a lover in an embrace resembling Rodin's The Kiss.
    • At the start of the movie, three orange rockets are painted on the wall. These resemble the rocket built in A Grand Day Out. Also, there is a toy version of the rocket to the side of the wardrobe that Feathers McGraw locks Gromit in.
