    Truevisions HD

They came to install Truevisions HD last Friday, and I have had the chance to sit down and watch a bit of it this afternoon. There are two new channels, which cost an extra 290thb per month. Quality looks good, especially on the sports channel, and HBO HD is passable, although not as good as downloads or Blu-Ray.

The highest resolution is 1080i, although the box can output at 576i (DVD quality), 720p (HD Ready) as well. Both channels have Dolby Digital sound and output at 1080i.

The box is a better looking effort than the Topfield we had before and required a further refundable 2,000thb deposit on top of the original 2,000thb deposit we paid for the basic decoder. It has HDMI output, Ethernet, optical audio and a USB slot in the back.

It will be worth it for the sports as they are going to show the World Cup in HD. Watched the highlight of Barcelona v Sevilla and the quality was superb. No ghosting or trails at all as with standard definition on a big screen LCD.

The menu system on the new decoder is also much improved and easier to use, and the normal standard definition channels look a little fresher as well.

I'm gonna go for it when they offer more HD channels- it's good to hear that it works fairly well, though.

Does the HD box work anywhere, on this page truevisions hd they talk something about an optical line to the condo, bla bla.

And what are the 2 new channels? If I get a Gold HD package, how many channels will actually be in HD?

    No ESPN 3D?

At least 25 world cup matches, and 85 live sporting events this year, in 3D.

    Beginning June 11th.

Yes, Al Jazeera are doing that as well.

I think only those with stupid amounts of money to spend will go and buy a 3D TV now.

I was also contemplating the HD option too. What time will the World Cup start from in Thailand?

Can you plug a hard disk into the USB slot and play your own? If so does it play MKV files?

My WDTV just blew up and this may be a worthwhile replacement if it works

    cheers

I also had True HD installed a couple of weeks ago, specifically for the World Cup. Channel 111 (HD Sport), is the only Thai channel that will be broadcasting the WC live (all 60 odd matches).

There are only 2 HD channels currently, HBO HD (Movies), and HD Sport. HD Sport is consistent in actually broadcasting in HD. Not the case with HBO HD, as it's a complete mirror of the regular HBO channel (43), and not all movies are actually broadcast in HD (I'm guessing approximately 50%).

I must reiterate the HD movies on HBO HD are nowhere near the quality of 1080p downloads or Blu-Ray.

Watching a Blu-Ray rip of Book of Eli at the moment in 1080p and it looks (and sounds) fantastic.

True say they are going to broadcast all 64 World Cup games in HD, so if that is the case it will be worth the extra 290thb a month I pay for it.

We've just had it installed and it works on all of our old normal tv's, the hd ready tv's and the projectors. Obviously none of them are true HD quality but just thought I'd let you know for anyone that is worried it won't play on their tv. The picture is still better than regular True sports channels.

Yes but I'm not sure if it will be in HD English
