You want a media tank. They will plug into a normal TV using component cables (like a normal DVD player) or into an HDTV via HDMI.
I have the Western Digital TV media tank bought in Panthip for 4,000 odd Baht and it plays all of the files I have fed through it so far. I download then extract x.264 files to my external 2.5" HDD and plug it into the media tank via USB, which is in turn plugged into the TV via HDMI.
It has been a worthwhile investment and I have almost 2TB worth of HD content so far.
