What "Jaws" did for offshore swimming, Jeremy Wade's "River Monsters" does for a quick, refreshing dip in the rivers of Thailand.

The reassuringly named series kicks off another season tomorrow night with Wade hot on the trail of a fish he calls either the "death ray" or else an unpronounceable local term roughly meaning that if you get stung, you'd rather die than endure the pain.

We aren't at the "Mayberry R.F.D." fishin' hole anymore, Toto.

The fish Wade spends this hour hunting is a freshwater sting ray, a cousin of the saltwater fish that killed nature guy Steve Irwin a couple of years back.

For those keeping score, Wade waits about nine minutes to make his one and only reference to Irwin. He does not skimp, however, on graphic descriptions of the damage rays can do...
