    INVICTUS - Mandela/SA Rugby Flick

INVECTUS is being hailed as the 2010 box office smash hit here in the rugby mad Pacific Islands.

Did it make it to Thailand yet? If so any reviews?

Eastwood, Morgan Freeman, Matt Damon ... hard to think this mob will fail ...

    INVECTUS

For almost two decades, many Hollywood insiders believed Morgan Freeman was destined to play the role of former South African president Nelson Mandela. Freeman, 72, has already received a Golden Globe nomination for best actor as Mandela in Invictus and is also tipped as an Oscar contender for the part.

Freeman was anointed by Mandela in the early 1990s when asked to choose which actor he would like to see play him in a movie. His immediate response? Freeman.

"After that, I became the heir apparent," Freeman smiles.

Freeman jumped at the chance to play Mandela in Invictus, which is directed by Clint Eastwood and also stars Matt Damon. Based on the John Carlin book, Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game That Changed a Nation, the film tells the story of events surrounding the historic 1995 Rugby World Cup. The final game between the South African Springboks and New Zealand's All Blacks brought the divided nation together as never before.

"On that day, they saw themselves come together as a country for one day and it's marked in the hearts of every South African," Freeman says. "When I was in South Africa, I'd talk to people about that day and they'd well up and just get teary. It brought out their patriotism, their idea of self and country."

To play Mandela, Freeman watched hours of documentary footage of him, closely studying everything from a simple hand gesture to how Mandela greeted his staff. Freeman's biggest concern, however, was mastering the accent.

"I was wondering how I was ever going to get that sound because it sounds like he's talking from the back of his throat. I was really trying to get his voice right," Freeman says.

The actor first visited Mandela at his home in Johannesburg and was at a loss for words when he came face to face with him.

"Well, when you meet someone like that it's not like you can say, 'Hey man, how are you doing? What's up?' It's a challenge to meet someone of such stature," Freeman says.

Freeman says their meetings since have been more relaxed.

His Invictus co-star Damon, who plays Springboks captain Francois Pienaar, also met with Mandela and Damon proudly shows Metro the screensaver on his phone.

"This is my wife and children meeting with him," he smiles.

"Look at the way my baby girl is looking at him with such admiration. He definitely has an aura about him."

After reading the script for Invictus, Damon called Eastwood immediately and said he couldn't believe the story was actually true.

"It's such a beautiful story and it seems like it was made to be a movie but if I wrote this as an original screenplay, you would string me up by my thumbs because you'd think I was being ridiculous," he laughs.

One of the most pivotal scenes for Damon was when he went to Robben Island and stood in the cell where Mandela was held captive for much of his 27-year incarceration.

"It was so deeply affecting for me to be standing there," Damon says. "If you look at that scene closely, you'll see it on my face."

One of the benefits for Damon playing Pienaar was he got to get back in shape after playing the pudgy Mark Whitacre in The Informant!

"I was in the gym constantly putting on the muscle but it got a little too much. My wife didn't like it, either. She was like, 'Oh God, gross.' So I think she liked my Informant body better."

HAve you seen it? Be interested in your own views.
It was reviewed in yesterday's Bangkok Post, but they didn't provide a release date.
I looked for reviews online, the one I use most often 'Rotten Tomatoes' gave it 76% approval, this gathered from 166 film critics reviews. I guess the subject matter makes it difficult to rate - as i'd expect many of the film critics they used were from USA - where rugby, the World Cup (and possible even South Africa!) would not rate too much of a mention in the news.
You said it was popular in the Pacific Islands - but I can't see their being big queues in New Zealand to see it!
I'll wait for the DVD. Actually it's not the kind of movie I'd expect to be shown at the two cinema complexes here in Phuket; will they bother to dub it into Thai?

Nah, islands I mean places like Fiji, Cooks etc, the few that have cinemas. They are so excited. Realistically we'll get it in a few months and was just wondering if it was worth the hype.

According to: Invictus (2009) - Release dates
Release date was 7 January for Thailand - Bkk I assume
    Australia gets it 21 January
and . . . New Zealand was not even on the list (perhaps it is banned there?) - maybe they are linked with Australia.

I've seen it. I was a bit worried that Matt Damon as Pineaar and the whole usual 'Hollywoodisation' process might have spoilt it but was pleasantly surprised that wasn't the case.

Good film and enjoyable watch. Some rugby fans might get a bit finicky and picky over the rugby scenes but that's only a minor issue in my book.

Can anyone recommend a decent torrent for this. Downloaded it 5 times with each version being dodgy only providing links to sites to download X3 players and to access passwords etc

    Here you go mate:

    Invictus.DVDSCR.XviD-xSCR.avi (download torrent) - TPB

Unfortunately it's in two parts (seperate avi files) but otherwise the quality's good.

Is it really a good idea to blatantly encourage piracy on here?

No offence intended, but it's never really a good idea to give copyright police an obvious target.

I only ask because PMs are available. We know the copyright police are here, ask Phuket businesses. If they can see any value in it, they will go after soft targets.

Still, when in Rome, as they say.

Who's got a decent link for Sherlock Holmes?

Besides which, once you've seen Team America - World Police, how can you ever take Matt Damon seriously again

    Matt Damon!

Nope, point taken. He's got it now anyways, probably good idea to remove the link. Better safe than sorry and all that.
