| Best gangster film eva eva Have just finished watching Public Enemies with Johnny Depp and a host of other good actors/actresses. I waited this long for a decent copy from IPT, well worth it. Absolutely riveting from beginning to end, fanatastic dialogue, costume and SFX. Batman (FBI agent Purvis) was pretty cool, must find out why he killed himself shortly after Dillinger died. It's all about John Dillinger and his buddies ( Baby Face Nelson et al ) robbing banks during the 1930's Great Depression. Recommended without reservation. Fuck what the critics say...watch it. |

| Nan | From Wikipedia: Death On February 29,1960, while at his home in Florence, South Carolina, Melvin Purvis died from a gunshot wound to the head fired from the pistol given to him by fellow agents when he resigned from the FBI. (The popular folk anecdote that the gun that killed Purvis was in fact the same gun that he used to take down Dillinger is apocryphal.) The FBI investigated the shooting and labeled it a suicide, though the official coroner's report did not find sufficient evidence to label the cause of death as such. It was later determined that Purvis may have shot himself accidentally while trying to extract a tracer bullet jammed in the pistol. He was 56 years old. Authors Gentry and Summers conclude that Purvis committed suicide upon learning he had inoperable brain cancer. Public Enemy; nice film but a bit too much machine gun blasting in the dark. I liked the scene where he walks into the Chicago Police Dept. and sees his 'past' and the mugshots of his late pals.... don't know if that ever happened for real. In terms of scenery/decors I much more liked "The Godfather 1, 2 and 3" as well as "Once upon a time in America". |

| I was in Tuskers and the Irish Bar a couple of weeks back looking for some drinking partners hoping to meet some TD folk. Didn't happen. But will do it again soon and will buy you a pint if film disappoints. |

| Public Enemies started quite well- first 30 minutes or so- and then fizzled. Damned shame. Still worth a watch on DVD. Of the films mentioned above, oddly enough I wouldn't consider Godfather I-II (none dare call it a trilogy) a gangster movie, although a good argument can certainly be made . "Goodfellas" and "Long Good Friday" are both movies I could watch just about anytime.
