Bladerunner was good , but very disjointed which removed too much of the meaning from the book
SciFi works best in books at the moment - but as CGI gathers pace , better movies will come

No1. The Thing.
Loved the first Matrix film but it then descended into tosh.
Worst: Dune, pile of shite and i watched the whole fucking film waiting for it to become entertaining. It never happened.
Watched Event Horizon again the other night after reading this thread.
Here's a couple of bits of the more memorable dialogue from it.
D.J.: I wasn't going to tell you this. I've been listening to the distress signal, and I, um, think I made a mistake in the translation.
[Plays the distress signal]
Miller: Go on.
D.J.: I thought it said "liberate me" - "save me." But it's not "me." It's "liberate tutame" - "save yourself." And it gets worse.
[Plays the distress signal again]
D.J.: There - I think that says "ex inferis." "Save yourself... from hell." Look, if what Doctor Weir tells us is true, this ship has been beyond the boundaries of our universe, of known scientific reality. Who knows where it's been, what it's seen. Or what it's brought back with it.
Miller: From hell.
Miller: Oh. My. God. What happened to your eyes?
Dr. Weir: Where we're going, we won't need eyes to see.
Miller: What are you talking about?
Dr. Weir: I created the Event Horizon to reach the stars, but she's gone much, much farther than that. She tore a hole in our universe, a gateway to another dimension. A dimension of pure chaos. Pure... evil. When she crossed over, she was just a ship. But when she came back... she was alive! Look at her, Miller. Isn't she beautiful?
Miller: Your "beautiful" ship killed its crew, Doctor.
Dr. Weir: Well... now she has another crew. Now she has us.
Brilliant stuff!

My Brother , (in Aus) is a mad keen sci fi fanatic..
District Nine was released there a while ago and he gave it the two thumbs up , Best SCi fi movie ...or any movie it would seem he has seen for many years.
Will be seeing it tomorrow night and give a report ..
Definitely, I have all 3 versions, never gets oldOriginally Posted by Humbert
I disagree, it wasn't bad per se, it's a cult classic. Very original at the time, and still today. I recently watched the original version on DVD not remastered and it looked like crap. I have recently got from a friend the new HD re-mastered version and I have been told it was night and day and will just add a new dimension to the movie. Lynch himself hated that movie, but I think it was probably his best !!!Originally Posted by Humbert

Not the best, but Mars Attack was pretty funny.....

One of my favourite sci-fi sleeper films is Sunshine by Danny Boyle.
Being a HUGE David Lynch fan and obviously Dune, I was sorely disappointed in this first attempt to adapt Frank Herbert's classic novel to celluloid... No way you can compress the original Dune novel to 2 - 3 hours of film... The SciFi Channel finally did it justice in 2000 as a mini-series and is highly recommended...
David Lynch's series Twin Peaks is still relevant today... I occassionally still watch it for the weird factor...
^ didn't read the novel, and not surprised it was impossible to fit it in such a movie. That said, I still think it was original work, great costume, great dialogues and a lot of interesting dark scenes
If I recall correctly I saw that years ago, and it was the biggest load of unmitigated crap ever.
Funny think about Herbert though, he seems to be one of those authors that publish as much after they are dead as they did before...I stopped following the books a good while ago. The first one was awesome, second good, third ok and then it started descending into sludge...
Maybe we should start a second thread about best and worst sci fi/fan books.
