I don't have an iphone but one of my staff just bought the 3g version. (45,000 god knows why theyed want it) He'd not been able to unlock it to read his sim card from his own computer and asked could he try on mine. When it was conected up and itunes asked "do you want to update?" I said don't do it, but he was sure that's what your suppossed to do so we did and it worked fine. I also updated itunes with the iphone plugged in. After it was all done I did notice a button on itunes saying "restore factory settings" so i'd asume that even if you did update it and it all goes tits up then you could just reset it.

    Hope this helps.

The Phone wont open to that stage. It just has the slid bar saying cant read sim and when I slid to unlock it goes to emergency phone calls only

The restore button was on itunes on the computer. I think it does the same thing for ipods.

    Rigger,

The only way an iPone locks itself is if you update to new firmware or restore the previous firmware. You've likely upgraded to the 2.0 version (I'm assuming you have a 1st generation iPhone, not the new 3G one.)

Locked, you cannot use any SIM other the Apple's partner companies and must have a contract with them. 1-2-Call ain't gonna work.

Fortunately for you, a tool to unlock 2.0-version firmware phones was just released yesterday. The site was swamped and crashed, but might be back up now.

    Main Page - WinPwn

If 2.0 software is not installed -- meaning you still have the 1.1.4 version, -- youc an easily unlock it with ZiPhone at ZiPhone's Blog

ZiPhone has not released a 2.0 version yet.

The "What phone should I buy?" thread is around the corner, second to the left.
