Long Way Down (Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman)

Following the success of "Long Way Round ", Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman are doing it again, but this time through Africa on their BMW1200 GS.
First episode was last night, and can be downloaded here.

If you want to check out the series web site

Although the shows very stage managed, it still makes good viewing.

Got to admit the first episode was a bit disappointing to say the least. (OK it was shit)
However i think it will be worth sticking with it, especially when they have to pass through those war torn countries of Africa. (or is that wishful thinking)

I read the book The Long Way Round and thought it was a bit lame.

Seemed like a pair of girls whining and moaning about everything while they had a huge backup support team. What was all the drama with whether they would get the bikes for free from KTM or BMW? Like the pair of them are not minted - fock off.

Everything was done up like a drama. It reminded of that UK comedy series Dead Ringers and how they used to take the piss out of that sailor woman Ellen somebody always making a drama out of every situation no matter how mundane. Well that's what these pair of pansies were like. If I got a free BMW GS1150 and a tent you would not see me for dust and I wouldn't be pissing and moaning about it.

Anyway I thought I would give the TV series a go to see if it was better than the book but I didn't think it was.

You're absolutely right about the constant whining and the back up support team is full of dumb pricks as well. Second episode they get lost in France, a full team, about to navigate darkest Africa and they are lost in France coz their GPS went down. How stupid are they?

Then it started raining so they all had a big cry about that, poor Ewan had water run up his sleeve.

I think it was about 7 days in whilst they were journeying through Italy that they said the pressure was really hard on them.

And what's the problem with the timetable all the time, whining on about how they are behind schedule, and how they have to rush along. For fcuk's sake, they must of had a crew of a hundred people working on this show, several of them planning the time table and route, how can they be behind schedule after a week when nothing has gone wrong?

The good thing is they are in Africa now so at least can see some nice landscapes. Still hoping a pissed off bike loving tribe with ak's will cross their path soon. Let's hope that Charley guy gets it in the head first.

I've completely changed my opinion about this. I want Ewan to get it in the head first, but only so I can enjoy the pleasure of Charley standing over his lifeless body screaming "NO! THAT'S MY MEAL TICKET YOU HAVE SHOT! THAT'S MY MEAL TICKET!!!"

What a pair of pansies, is right.

Billy Connolly in Oz on his souped up trike with nothing more than a bandana and shades is a million times more amusing.

I hope euan breaks both his frigging legs before too long.

fair chance of that, he falls off often enough.

i think you have to give them credit for the riding they did in Ethiopia and Kenya.
    it looked genuinely hard.

just about to watch the fifth episode.

I'd watch it but I wouldn't download it - I think Ewan McGregor is an avarage actor and a bit of a knob.

....And who the fuck is Charlie Boorman?

just seen ep 4, much better.

I notice they stand on the pegs a lot, whereas I was taught if the ground is dodgy, pebbles, sand etc then it is best to sit down firmly to keep the centre of gravity down.

My bike is 230Kg and its a bastard to pick up if I drop it.

If you stand up on the bike then the centre of gravity is lower as the weight is being transferred through the pegs instead of the seat. You are always advised to stand up on rough sections.

As for the show, it’s ok to watch but they make it out as if they are doing something new or extreme when in reality they are just making a movie.

I just find it hard to reconcile his performance as Renton in Trainspotting with the 'luvvy' he seems to have become.

I would have thought when you are standing up that the centre of gravity is slightly higher (not sure that point of contact between rider and bike has an effect on true total system COG). Standing up would then detract from the stability by raising COG but the fact that you are no longer seated on the bike means you can move your body mass around to control and adjust the COG of the bike/rider system and keep it centered over the midpoint between front and backwheel ground contact points so even though COG is raised slightly ability to balance the bike is increased significantly.
