I saw the light, recent bio pic of Hank Williams, great performance from the actor playing him but a bit of a lead weight as a film, poor editing and strange hand held camera shots, as well as too many scenes with his barmy women. Great music of course.

    A Bigger Splash

Tilda Swinton and Ralph Fiennes star in a slow-burn psychological drama about a love triangle around a rock star with a lost voice over a weekend holiday in Italy.

Swinton is good and Fiennes is very funny.

Good cast. Good acting. Original direction. The plot doesn't resolve as satisfyingly as you might hope although the journey is entertaining, especially the first half where the scene is contructed.

    7/10

    Camp X-Ray

Quite interesting look at life in Guantanamo as an unlikely friendship blossoms between a female grunt and a detainee.

The relationship is quite nicely drawn but we are given no clues about why the bloke is actually being held. He is presented in a very romantic and sympathetic light which seems a little too simple and easy an approach from the writer/director on his debut.

    7/10

Two of them actually: Insurgent and Allegiant. Insurgent is the prequel in The Divergent Series. Kate Winslett has a major role but isn't actually the star. The sound track is so good I downloaded it plus one of the songs is so good I checked out the artist (Royal Blood) and downloaded his debut album (2013) and like every track on it. So out of the gate Insurgent gets 5/10 for the soundtrack and another 2 for Winslet's acting. But in my right mind I can't give it anything higher than 7/10. Why are all these action/sci-fi/adventure films so full of 20 something beauties and buff guys? I didn't know there could be that many in Hollywood. It blows my mind.

The Divergent Series: Allegiant doesn't have rock songs on the soundtrack but it is still very listenable and follows or emphasizes the action to a 'T'. The two young stars in the series, Shailene Woodley and Theo James are watchable enough and the dialogues can be fully understood as well (these new action movies all seem to muffle most of the dialogue between the actors, as if there's no plot, just action). This time the big name star is Jeff Daniels, although his acting doesn't really ring a bell with me. So 6/10.

The sequel is called The Divergent Series: Ascendant but there are actually four films in the series. The first movie in the series is called Divergent (2014). Ascendant is the second part of the film adaptation of Allegiant and is due out in 2017. The series is based on the novels by American author Veronica Roth, if that impresses anybody.
“The Master said, At fifty, I knew what were the biddings of Heaven. At sixty, I heard them with docile ear. At seventy, I could follow the dictates of my own heart; for what I desired no longer overstepped the boundaries of right.”

    Sing Street

Fun movie about a teenage boy growing up in 80's Dublin and starting a band.

Lots of 80s nostalgia with fashion and school culture like This Is England. The central characters are well developed and believable which makes it a bit more than just a nostalgic comedy.

    7.5/10

    Queen of Earth

Rather strange psychological drama focussing in minute detail on the moody and tense interactions between a pair of girlfriends in a holiday cabin.

The brief reviews sounded interesting but it was a struggle to get through.

    I can give it 3/10

It would have been 4/10 but the director's lack of confidence in resorting to shaky cam to make it feel 'edgy' made the whole thing even worse.

    I hear ya Dilli.

But if I don't write up a shit score occasionally then who will believe my high scores?

Actually it got some interesting reviews so I was surprised how crap I found it and wondered if anybody else had seen it and got more out of it.

    Star Trek 3D.

Bloody cracking yarn, great visuals, good story and very good acting. Little bit of humor but not the usual Septic wank.

The Seppos usually go over the Top with this stuff but they have kicked a winner with this one.

Check it out. Long Movie, nearly 2 Hours.

^ I feel I must warn everyone before they watch this movie that Kevin Costner says/mutters the word "Urghh" about 7 million times throughout the film.

The "Urghh" is used when talking, in pain or whenever he opens his mouth. Got on my tits a bit, which nearly resulted in the film losing a valuable Bogon point off the Bogonscoreometer.

7/10 for me, and that's being generous.

    Nixon and Elvis

Kind of oddball piece about the real life meeting between the 2 men. Michael Shannon is too bug-eye ugly to play the king and the piece doesn't quite hang together despite Kevin Spacey doing a reasonable Nixon.

    5/10

I am looking forward to rewatching Frost/Nixon as I have rewatched all of Michael Sheens movies again recently except that one.

    Land of Mine

Set in the summer of 1945 a group of German infantry are set to the task of clearing mines on the Danish coastline after the war.

Pretty grim but I guess there is only so much fun that you can have in minefield.

I wasn't very impressed with Nixon and Elvis either.

The best Elvis I have seen is Bruce Campbell in Bubba Ho Tep. Not any kind of masterpiece but a comedy horror film (2002) worth a gander for the elderly Elvis, stuck in a nursing home with a Black JFK. A real giggle.

Embrace of the Serpent. Best film out there in quite a while.

Colombian adventure film. A tribal shaman, Karamakate, leads two western explorers through his disappearing world to find a sacred plant, during different times in his life.

My nearly 10 whopping gig copy was perfect with English subs. Tried a couple of smaller files but the subs were Spanish. Maybe there are more suitable copies.

    Zombieland - 2009

A more light-hearted take on the zombie apocalypse genre which focuses on the exploits of Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg playing typecast roles (hardman and wallflower respectively) trying to keep one step ahead of the undead.

They tangle with a couple of females also on the run and the film revolves around the cagey competitiveness between the 2 odd couples.

More fun than I imagine a real zombie apocalypse would be, including an strange encounter with Bill Murray.

    Star Trek Beyond.

I have always watched Star Trek since i was young original series with Shatner and all the rest of the Star trek series.

Started to watch the new movie yesterday but after 15 minutes gave up.
Far to much shooting and carnage at the beginning of a movie just make me switch off.
Will only give marks for the first 15 minutes of the movie 1/10.
Fascists dress in black and go around telling people what to do, whereas priests... more drink!

if you are a psychopath, probably

for everyone else, it's just a very sad situation for everyone, even the poor Ambassador who has naively put himself and the life of others in danger

every character in that movie is great, very well done
