Nokia Phones: Officially 'A Bit Shit'

So today my wife gives me a new phone, a Nokia N73 'Music Edition', comes bundled with that cool Moby song they're hammering on the TV ads. Pretty funky thing, all the usual bells and whistles plus pretty astounding sound quality.

I've had the same Nokia 6600 something or other for about 3yrs now, paid B28,000 for it brand new. Thing is it never worked, couldn't sync/connect it to my PC no matter what I tried. After several months of visits to the Nokia 'Service' (and no disrespect to that noble word intended) Center where they invariably simply reinstalled the OS repeatedly like they expected it to suddenly magically fix what it hadn't the previous 10 times (and wiping my contacts in the process), driver downloads, new cable etc etc... Nothing. Nada.

Finally, after several shitty emails/calls to the head office, Nokia struck upon a 'solution'. They'd send my phone to Bangkok for "2-3 months" to be fixed. Great I said, where's my replacement phone in the interim? This surprised them somewhat and after several minutes confusion it was then stated that there would be no replacement phone. Even after I pointed out that I used my phone for business and couldn't simply not have a phone for that long the point was lost on them.

Somewhere in all of this one of the service guys let slip that it's not uncommon for Nokia to 'trial' parts and software releases on Asian markets - iron out the bugs before they are released in Europe. Now I don't know if that's true and the rep that replied to me from Nokia's head office vehemently denied it, but you do have to wonder. Particularly since that was actually one of the few things they did bother to reply to.

Anyway eventually I simply gave up and was left with a phone that wouldn't connect to my PC, couldn't back up data, contacts etc. So a few years later and we arrive at today... Cool, new phone! Not only that but I can put loads of my music on it, perfect!

I guess you can see what's coming now... Yep, doesn't connect to my PC. Similar issue as last time: "USB Device Malfunctioned/Not Recognised" - and by the way before anyone says 'It's your PC' it's not, last time I tried it on several PC's and besides which everything else connects ok.

So to bring an end to this rambling tale this time I've struck on a solution. The phone is back in its box, my sim card back in my old phone, and tomorrow I shall be taking the phone back and telling them to stick it up their collective arse. I'm going to buy a Motorola or sumfing.

    Thank you.

Someone was saying it was your birthday, so congrats and all that. I used to have the N73 and it worked a treat. Did you install Nokia suite from the CD it comes with?

btw ... the N73 has a great little camera in it.

Oh yeah. Nokia PC Suite or whatever it's called. I am in fact right now in the process of deleting/removing them all from my PC.

Last time I tried every update/driver avaliable.

I'm seriously prepared to swallow the entire cost of the phone for the satisfaction of smashing it to bits in the store. Expensive yet wholly satisfying

Cheers WK, is indeed. The phone was a present from my wife

And yep, as above, did all the required installs etc. No joy. I'm simply not prepared to go through the same hoops as we did last time - refund or no, the phone's going back!

Was gunna say that the cable connection to the phone on the N73 is a bit dicky, I always had to put something about the thickness of a match box under the cable to make sure it would connect ok. They seem to have fixed this problem with the new Nokia 95.

Sounds like you've made up your mind so go and give the feckers heaps .

The copies don't look too bad, knew a girl had a copy N73, it wasn't bad, but couldn't connect to a computer. Last night met a more up-market girl with a copy N95, , this didn't even have a camera in it. The N73 copies are heaps better than the N95 ones. You could have a copy, especially if you live in a border area, might be a little embarassing if you take it to the shop.

I have an ancient, olive green Nokia. It's big, the uncoolest looking cell in Thailand, but totally reliable. I can call people with it and they can call me. The multimedia, seamless, connectivity, blah-blah-blah stuff just gives me a big headache. I can't take it anymore. Maybe I'm some kind of neo-Luddite, but I think we're reaching some sort of point of diminishing returns with technology. Most of the new expensive technology doesn't improve my life enough to justify the frustration of trying to get it to work.

my first nokia was several years ago - I went to MBK and aksed for a phone with no camera , bluetooth and GPRS - I walked out with the original ngage.
its operating system was symbian60 , plus it had a built in video chip and hardware mp3 decoder. I looked the thing up on the net and was quite amazed at what I could do with this machine - I was impressed with it.
I did install pcsuite back then to connect to it - what a sad piece of software , and you could not fully remove it with out a windows install.
but symbian60 , excellent , massive amounts of software out there for it.
I wouldn't use pcsuite rather bluetooth or a card reader to transfer to your memcard or phone.
contacts transfer is a good way to back up you phone contacts
    free - S60 Software
other free s60 stuff 3-Lib Symbian freeware

I now have a nokia 6110 navigator , another s60 phone , and am quite happy with it

I stopped using Nokia about 6 years ago. They have really high failure rates in comparisn with other brands. I now have a cheapo Motorola and the only problem I have is that I keep on forgetting to charge it up.

Cheers TP. I maintained an air of righteous surliness throughout and took my replacement phone with a haughty 'and don't do it again' sniff as was my right.

Once out of sight I giggled like a little girl
