    advice from gamers please

After my recent disappointment buying a game from Pantip Plaza I am considering buying a Playstation 3/X Box/Wii for myself.
Which is the preferred platform for Teakdoor readers?
Also I would hope to be able to play pirated games on the thing so I have to get a chipped one, right?
    Anything else I should know?
    Thanks for your advice

I don't have any of the three systems, but if were to buy one it would be the xbox 360. They have the most games. The Wii is also good but I've never tried it. I wouldn't buy a PS3 --- ALL the games suck (so I've heard) and it's losing money pretty badly. It'll still be awhile until their trademark games come out (Final Fantasy 13, Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 5, etc.). And yeah, to play pirated games you'll have to chip it.

In stark contrast to durian I would take the PS3 of the lot. The Wii is a bit 'gimicky' and the least powerful of the bunch, yes the 360 currently has more games than the PS3 but then it should as it has been out a full year longer. But it's just a matter of time, Sony has always enjoyed better 3rd party support than Nintendo or Microsoft (compare PS2 titles to X-Box and GameCube, more than both combined) and there's nothing to indicate this time is any different.

Likewise with playing priated games, they tend to follow a while after a system has been launched as people work out how to 'crack' the systems. That being said, I don't think I've seen any for the XBox 360?

So in summary, the PS3 is the most powerful of all 3, will undoutably have the bigger library of titles, and supports BlueRay technology which is currently wiping the floor with HD-DVD (which X-Box is based on).

True, the PS3 is the most powerful. And I really hope within the next year they come out with better games than the shit they are slinging now. I remember the day the system launched.......with 4 fucking games! Gimme a break. That's just insulting the the consumer. I really haven't checked the pirated games lot in BKK or in Pattaya in awhile (since I don't live there anymore), so maybe it's changed. If they get their shit together within the next year then yes, it will be the best system out there.

Isn't there a mod chip for the X-box 360? I know you can buy them modded here in Korea along with modded Wiis.

No, that's not what I'm saying... what I mean is that the PS3 will have a bigger library of titles overall. So if/when the games are pirated obviously this means more pirated games.

E.g. I got a PSP when it first came out. For the first few months there were no pirated games, then a few, then a few more, and now you can pretty much get everything.

I haven't yet seen any priated games for the 360 (although it's not like I've been looking either) so maybe they can't be pirated due to some protections or something?

    [Edit]

Ok there you go, if there's a mod-chip you must be able to get pirated games.

360 is capable of playing backups.

Easy to do if you want.

I love my 360 but I am concerned about them burning up.

Not modded it yet just in case it does burn out on me.

ALl the games are pirated, a lot released before their release date as well.

and with the pirated discs you just put them in the machine and they play with no messing about or requests for serial numbers (unlike PC games)?
Thanks for the advice guys - seems the PS3 or Xbox 360 is the way to go then.
    No Wii players out there?

I've had a go and admittedly it was fun, but to me it seemed like a bit of a novelty (the whole control thingy) and very much more for kids. Just my opinion mind.

Love the Wii, mainly for the novelty aspect as Ant mentioned. If you're looking for a bit of fun with some friends Wii is great, if you're looking to conquer worlds or become a godfather go for the 360

I have a five year old son. Think he may prefer the wii? Do any of these platforms have a good range of games for this age range?
Sorry for all the questions but all your advice is great.

Ahhh, well in that case I think the Wii is probably the way to go. The control is a motion sensor so, if for example playing a tennis game, you 'swing' the control to mimic the racket. Perfect for a boy of his age. Plus Nintendo does tend to have more 'cutesy' type games for kids.

Nintendo's market is kids. I do know adults who play nintendo (I'm one of them), but whenever I look at the games there's definitely more of a market for kids (think Super Mario, Pokemon, etc.). XBOX and PS is marketed more towards the 20s and early 30s crowd (and older). I find that Xbox (at least its predecessor) is marketed towards the 20 something crowd and sports fans (tons of sports games for the Xbox), but the 360 is branching out and has some really great games (Gears of War, Halo, etc.) The PS has always been good for RPGs along with survival horror and war games. Basically, if you want to blow shit up, conquer kingdoms, win the medal of honor, and watch great cut scenes, go for the PS3 or xBox. If you want endless frustrations (Mario is famous for this) and kid games, then go for the Wii.

    right.
armed with this knowledge I think my best plan is to go to the shops and take a look at the different games for each machine then, and then choose.

One thing I forgot to point out, in terms of price the Wii is also by far the cheapest (followed by the 360 then the PS3 - however all the 'mods' for the 360 to match the PS3's performance make it more expensive).

    Happy shopping!

i dont think the PS3 can be chipped yet.....i have asked a few sporean teenagers so it must be true.

i think i will be buying a Wii as it seems to have more games which are fun for all the family - and it can be chipped.

If your looking to enjoy it together with your son, then i would say the Wi is the one for you.
If your looking to share it and play at different times, then i would 360, plus you download copy games from demonoid.
For me though its PC every time. Not too difficult to find a crack or serial.
    Enjoy

The Wii is for children. There are no decent adult games for it & never will be (the latest Grand Theft Auto, for instance). I have a 360 & I find it okay, but wish every time I play it I'd bought a PS3.

As for chipping issues, it is only a matter of time before someone sorts that out.

    That's likely the only one.

You only have to look at the selection of games on the shelves to see the Wii is aimed at kids.

I think you mean the GameCube, slim. That was indeed a great game but what made it 'best' is that it was only avaliable on GC for some time (later ported to PS2 and I think XBox)

Ahh right, that's just a port of the same game:

RE4 Wii Edition also contains the additional content included in the PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system version of the game

Just bought Wayne Jnr (4.5 yrs) a PS2 ... 6,500 baht and they threw in ten games. I got the Japanese version which is important for playing copy games ... apparently the Chinese version cannot play all copy games that well.

Best thing is just put the disk in and the game plays ... no fucking around with keys and shit like on copy PC games. Games are very cheap and there are hundreds of them that suit young kids.

Had some Wii fanatics here recently ... that seems like fun, espcially the sport games like bowling. I quizzed them on suitability for my young bloke but they advised waiting until hes a few years older. I'm not a gamer so can't see the value in the PS3 or other similarly expensive toys.

I think you can download PS2 games from torrent sites and burn them on a DVD, can you do the same with Xbox and PS3???
