    PBS

Are any non-Americans familiar with the Public Broadcasting Service aired in the US and on some cable/satellite systems? It's like the BBC of America, but almost no commercials. Lots of thoughtful, serious documentaries and excellent news, etc. I particularly like:

    (Investigative Journalism)
    FRONTLINE: home | PBS

    (News Magazine)
Bill Moyers Journal . Home | PBS

(6/11 p.m. News - one hour duration: Fox News NOT!)
    Online NewsHour | PBS

    (Science)
    NOVA | PBS

    (Documentaries)
P.O.V. - See the world through my eyes | PBS
Independent Lens - an Independent Film Festival in your Living Room | PBS

Too often people judge Americans by Fox News or CNN, imho.

Fox was my favourite TV show when I lived in Thailand.

Bill & his no spin zone (strangely, full of spin) was my favourite - then Greta, I liked her a lot.

It seems the rest of the world is unaware Americans have very thoughtful programs, without commercials, in which people are interviewed, at length.

I particularly like how at the end of every show the News Hour silently displays the faces of every soldier killed since the last broadcast.

PBS is great, but it's tough to be totally honest about the war when the Bushies are funding your programming. They do come the closest to "unbiased" though.

They try not to be lumped into the "bias liberal media" tag by running programs like Amercan Experience (history) and shows like The War, the latest Ken Burns documentary about WWII (which is excellent, btw, been watching it the last week0. I often put PBS on the 'return' button on the remote during commercial breaks for other networks because the amount of commercials have got completely out of hand on some stations, CNN in particular.

I presume they broadcast BBC made shows then?

Many non-Americans know about PBS though they probably couldn't name it. After all, it's where Sesame Street comes from and most of us of certain ages were brought up watching that program.

    Thanks I'll have a look.
I tend to read stuff about the states from IMC.
Wouldn't go near Fox as it's for muppets.

^ Exactly, and a lot of people think all Americans watch Fox: untrue, although PBS watchers tend to be better educated. In fact the single most popular news show in America right is The Daily Show with Jon Stewart (on the Comedy Network).

    Thames Television

Monty Python in the 70's (which is why North Americans seem to like this show more than the British!), The Two Ronnies, Dave Allen, Upstairs/Downstairs, On the Buses, The Irish RM, Masterpiece Theatre with Alistair Sinclair, Not the Nine O'Clock News, Fawlty Towers, Inspector Morse, Sherlock Holmes, etc.

Only cheap local stations bothered with Benny Hill, but one always would. British comedy was much racier than North American fare hence had a loyal following among boys of all ages across the continent!

Ken Burns did a great documentary series for PBS about the history of jazz music. I ordered it off Amazon.
I think PBS should go international- I would love to have it available by satellite.
