    Music your parents listened to.

    Music your parents listened to.

I was remembering what I used to listen to in the back of my parents Ford Capri when I was a nipper. The cassette jammed in the player with half a peg or the inside of a bog roll keeping it playing.
To this day I know every lyric that the band Queen,The Small Faces and Bob Dylan wrote! The only one I would listen to now would be The Small faces though.

Can you remember what you were brought up on?

Yeap i remember my dad had an old 8 track? in the car all i remember of them is that where big tapes that went round and round and never stopped till you ejected them.
All he ever played was the kinks kinda got used to it and sing along.
He also used to play "Around the horn" with kennith willams i think ,and also some other comedy with spike milligan or was that the same one can't remember now...ohps long time ago it seems now parental influence eh

In my early years it was Paul Simon's Graceland album, over & over again.

Some happy memories whenever I hear Diamonds On the Sole of Her Shoes, even though I despise the song.

Again, memories in the car on long journeys: Queen or the Moody Blues, particularly the "In search of a lost chord" album. That was Dad. Mum was into everything from Elvis to Boney M. I know the words to many, many 60's songs from before I was even born.

Obviously, my sister & I grew up listening to the same music. I love it, often listening to it through choice now. My sister hates it. Weird, huh?

The Lennon Sisters, Pati Page, Elvis Presly, Rosemary Clooney, Perry Como, Pat Boon, Brian Hyland, Frank Sinatra, Benny Goodman, Ross Bagdasarian (David Seville), Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, Bill Haley, Jerry Lee Lewis, and so on. Mostly on road trips in the back of a '54 Ford.

And, I just recalled Patience and Prudence. Anyone remember them? Their big hit was "Tonight, You Belong To Me"....

Ah, yes. The musicals. My parents' favorites were "Carousel", "My Fair Lady" and "Oklahoma". I liked, and still like, "South Pacific".

Hank wililams, lefty frizell, Earl Scruggs, lester flat, patsy cline Then when mom got a holt of the tuner... Really don;t remember her choices perry como sure had to be in there.

Mom's used to sing in honky tonks and dives in The City during the War introduced to me soe of her musician friends remember one dude "Big Tiny Little" used to buy me hopalong cassidies (Shirley Temple renamed so I'd fuckin drink 'em) while mom would belt out the Pearl Bailey type songs, sittin up on the piano. Jesus She embarrassed the shit out of me, whenever we went any where. Last time I saw her, five years ago, she was 80 years old; still beltin' out the tunes at the drop of a hat, still embarrassing the shit out of me. she didn't listen to music so much she had to perform.

Dad never listen to music, only at home he listen to the radio if it was working, kinda tempremental to get an old AM to work far away, he listen to the fights and amos & andy,, shit like that, baseball games, even if deer hunting he would be at the 39 Ford to listen to the world series, glad of it too as I could rest instead of chasing around looking for a Buck.

Only heard music at the Grange dances where a bunch of guys would play when they wasn't in the parking lot drinking whiskey and fighting, that was Grandpas fav. stuff.

^ Shit that was what I was listening to when young. Edit- young but old enuff to start buying my own stuff.

My parents liked The Platters, Shirley Bassey, Hermans Hermits. Mum liked Tom Jones, Dad hated him (penis envy). These were the good ones- I still like the Platters & HH's.

They bought an eight track discrete surround system cartridge player cheap, with lots of lights and big crappy speakers, shortly before they became defunct. It was Dads pride and joy- he was the original chav. Then they went around buying totally unknown 'artists' stuff on these eight track cartridges cheap, and pretended to be cool. I remember a lot of jazz drumming, and electronic harmonies.

Then, they bought the Beta system shortly before that became defunct, 'cus it was cheap and on special. Of course, VHS was already taking over but they bought lotsa cheap Beta stuff because nobody else wanted to buy it.

    And so on.

My Dad was a huge Duane Eddy fan, whenever we had a daytrip somewhere dad used to crank up the old car cassette player and blast all our ear drums out! Mum insisted it gave her a headache.

My dad had the worst tapes in the world.

Boxcar Willie, Chas and Dave, Shakin Stevens. They were all from the Woolworths bargain bucket.

My mum liked better stuff but all she had were records so it was always my dads music in the car unfortunately.......

The only tape I remembered in the car was Gary Glitter.

Dad liked the Beatles, Elvis, Eddie Cochran and that kinda stuff.

Mum liked Carol King, Carly Simon, Barely Manenough and Barbara Streisand. She listened to a lot on melancholy stuff after Dad died.
