Gaia GPS?

I downloaded it the other day as looks like it might be a useful app for adventure/trail riding. Supposed to be good for hikers and mountain bikers etc. Does anyone use it and is it any good? The reviews seem favourable but after downloading it at 699bht, the features that are useful to me are in the subscription package as 1400bht a year.

Anyone subscribe to it?

I use free app, Viewranger, it connects to multiple GPS systems, free road and mountain contour maps available of Thailand. Completed journey can be downloaded and copied to Google Earth and flown along. Adjustable to motor, walking, cycling speeds/accuracy/resolution.

I've even use it to do do GPS surveys of locals farms. There is a feature to display the location of one's buddy, which can be useful.

Premium maps appear to be available at a cost.

Don't mind paying for stuff when folks have worked their asses off for something i can use.

Google maps is good, i agree.

The feature i like with Gaia - which may be available with others, is the a ability to record and playback if I wanted to use it in a video for other ADV riders that might be interested in the route.

I have used it for normal journeys in the car, and while the graphics are simple, it seems more accurate than google. Quite often I have found my actual position is slightly different than what google is putting out.

I will give it a go, anyway.

I use Gaia. When I am off grid it is nice to have the national parks maps.

^Yep, that's what appealed to me. Seems accurate with a dummy run to Sueng Pueng and Khao Krajom mountain trail. Google drops out at the start of the mountain.

^ Yep just make sure you let it download all the maps in your local area. It is a real gem.

And the non GPS chip equipped handset, in the mountains beyond cell phone coverage, knows where it is how?

No cell phone coverage.

It seems the GAIA app can utilise cell phone towers and a GPS signal. If your phone has a GPS receiver chip you may need to turn it on or it will only locate itself if there is a cell phone or two nearby.

As always the cost is in the mapping data. Best to confirm what mapping/scale is available in your location prior to purchasing along with when it was surveyed.

As well as, for back country work, a GPS chipped handset which works preferably with multiple GPS systems.
