    Minix VS True/Netflix

After getting completely fed-up with the repeats and reruns on True, I eventually looked into Minix as a couple of mates recommended it. In the meantime I also signed up to Netflix and for me, it seems pretty reasonable.

So a couple of weeks a go I ordered a fully loaded Minix NEO U1, and it has to be said the list of movies and TV channels is pretty impressive. Plenty of porn options via Kodi too! After playing around with it for a few days I ditched True platinum at home and office (saving 4k per month) and ordered a second unit to run at work and all is good.

In the meantime I needed to replace a kaput TV at the office so I treated myself this afternoon to a 55" LG for home and swapped out my 50" LG to use at work. My new LG is a HDR HD Pro jobbie blah blah blah, but the picture quality compared to my Sony 49" which I use in another room is pants. While watching Continuum - which is new to me the picture on the Sony is vivid and crisp. While on the new LG can only be described as dusty in comparison. After running up and downstairs a few times to do a comparison feeling totally pissed of with my purchase, I wondered if the Minix was the issue?

So on the new LG I ran Netflix via the TV instead of through Minix and the picture has totally transformed. The Minix, as good as it is for choices, degrades the picture somewhat, making it look dusty with shadows on the edges. Just to be sure, I swapped out the HDMI cable and tried the other Minix box I have and the picture is the same. Don't get me wrong, it isn't bad and the box is well worth the purchase if you want to ditch True. But if quality of picture is a concern, playing Netflix via the TV's built in option, the quality of picture is day and night in comparison.

That being said, the quality of the Minix is equal to or better than True.

Since owning them, other than the kids channels which is greater than True, I've only watched one movie as I still prefer Netflix. I guess for me I am catching up as some of these Movies and TV shows have been out a while which I've never seen or heard of.

Have you played with the Minix Display settings?

And are you using the right HDMI cable?

Yes, I've checked settings and it was also setup by the shop. Used the supplied HDMI cable and an XLO high-end one. Seems the same.

Besides, I can't see any setting that would allow adjustment for picture quality.

Display settings should be there somewhere, but I'm not familiar with the Minix so can't tell you where on the menu.

    You can normally adjust resolution/frequency.

check on your TV remote the screen resolution button when you are running that TV box

it should say 1080i or 1080p,

anything less than 720p is going to look like shit,

so the box is outputting 1080p

it's still possible the box is trying to upscale a weak signal that is below 1080 or even 720 and that is why it looks like shit

best test is to use your BR player with a BR DVD

If Netflix on the TV is OK and on the box it isn't, then it's the box settings, assuming you're playing the same content on both.

I did find this from 2015:

    Some important points:
    - Even though the U1 can decode 10-bit, video output will be 8-bit only due to lack of video player Software support (this includes Kodi)
    - This 8-bit video output restriction with Kodi applies to all hardware platforms.
Are you on the very latest firmware?

Do any of these results match yours?
